Hong Kong One Weekly reported that in June, about half of Mainland China was
flooded by water and the other half faced an invasion of locusts. Since April of
this year, locust infestations have damaged many areas. A total of 14 provinces
have announced an emergency alert for locusts. The area around Tianjin has been
one of the most severely affected. Although airplanes are spraying insecticide
day and night, the destructive toll of the locusts continues to mount while
hordes of the swarming insects move toward Beijing. Locust infestations have
enormous destructive power, leaving little behind in their wake. The destruction
caused near the border between Sichuan and Hunan Provinces is even worse. Total
losses so far are difficult to estimate.
