Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Tian Fengcheng was arrested by officers Xu Guofeng, Liu Long, and others from the Songshan District Police Station on April 22, 2009. The Songshan District Court sentenced Mr. Tian to three and half years in prison. During the time Mr. Tian was imprisoned, his wife became disabled from an accident and his son was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The prison refused to release Mr. Tian to help his family.

Mr. Tian had an excellent reputation in his village, because he did not argue with anyone and made himself available to those in need.

Wife disabled

After Mr. Tian was sent to prison, his wife Ms. Gao Shuyun had to support their family and take care of their son. Unfortunately, she broke her right hand and right foot in an accident while working on their vegetable farm.

Son has cancer

Last year, Mr. Tian's son was diagnosed with late stage cancer from a growth in his neck. At that time, Mr. Tian only had one month left in prison. Ms. Gao desperately needed Mr. Tian to come home, so she went to the village committee office to ask for help. The Songshan District Political Office clerk and the police station officials were all present during Ms. Gao's visit.

His wife's request

Ms. Gao talked about all of the hardships her family had endured since Mr. Tian had been arrested. She told them that she had only one request: “Would you show some mercy? Release my husband so he can take care of our child.” The Songshan District Political Office clerk and the police would not release Mr. Tian despite Ms. Gao's pleas. Eventually, a village official stood up for Ms. Gao, “Under these circumstances, you still won't release him?!” The Songshan District Political Office clerk reluctantly agreed to send her request to the higher officials.

No early release

Chifeng No. 4 Prison sent two guards the hospital to check on Mr. Tian's son, Mr. Tian Yuanwei. They asked about his condition, took some pictures of him, and looked at his chart. They reported their findings to the prison. The prison declined his release: “Tian Fengcheng cannot be released early if he has not been 'transformed.' Tian Fengcheng can call his son. We have already shown humility on our part.”

One phone call allowed

Mr. Tian called his son and told him, “My son, recite 'Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good', and you will get better soon.” The prison official was very angry about this phone call. Mr. Tian was not allowed to call his son again. He was also brutally tortured because of the call. According to a released prisoner, Mr. Tian was beaten very badly and hung up. His face was covered in sweat from the pain and those who saw it were fearful.

Desperate circumstances

Mr. Tian was released on April 25, 2013. Because he had not been “transformed,” the Chifeng and Songshan District Political and Legal Affairs Committee, the 610 Office and the police station wanted to take Mr. Tian directly to a brainwashing center the day that he was released. Mr. Tian insisted that he see his son at the hospital.

Accompanied by two police officers, Mr. Tian went to the hospital and saw his son, who could no longer speak. He held his father's hands and cried. Ms. Gao cried, too. She told her husband that the hospital bill was over 70,000 yuan. She had borrowed money from their relatives and friends and now had almost nothing left.

The doctor told them, “He will die as soon as we stop treating him.”

Re-arrest planned

It was reported that the Songshan District and the Chifeng Political and Legal Affairs Committee, the 610 Office, and others plan to arrest Mr. Tian again and send him to a brainwashing center as soon as his son is released from the hospital.
