(Minghui.org) Chengdu Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Zhongfang, in her 50s, went on hunger strike for more than three months to protest her illegal arrest on August 1, 2017. She has been forced-fed, and her life is in danger.
On October 27, officers from Dongpo Police Station told the family that Ms. Li was in critical condition and asked them to see her at Xinhua Neighborhood Health Service Center, a designated hospital for the Chengdu City Detention Center.
When the family arrived, they were shown medical records indicating that Ms. Li had severe pneumonia and systemic dyspepsia hypoproteinemia. They were asked to agree and sign a statement, which stated that she may die if her condition does not improve.
The family doubted the validity of the statement since the document does not name the responsible physician and the hospital. They questioned whether the detention center was trying to cover up for their brutal persecution and evade legal liability if Ms. Li died.
They stated that Ms. Li's physical condition was very good when she was arrested and refused to sign the document. They urged the involved authorities to release Ms. Li immediately.
Ms. Li's lawyer met her at the prison hospital. He saw his client handcuffed and shackled, even though she was very weak. She was unrecognizable and looked very old.
Because of her poor medical condition, Ms. Li's lawyer filed a medical parole request with the Qingyang District Procuratorate at the end of October. As of today, no response has been received, and attempts to reach the procurator by phone have not succeeded.
