(Minghui.org) A 65-year-old Shenyang City, Liaoning Province resident was recently sentenced to five years for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Jiang Shumei was arrested on February 26, 2021, while studying Falun Gong’s teachings at home with another practitioner, 76-year-old Ms. Xu Zhenying. The police ransacked Ms. Jiang’s home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, computer and printer.
Both Ms. Jiang and Ms. Xu were arrested and held in secret at the Shenyang City Detention Center. Ms. Xu was tried through a virtual hearing by the Huanggu District Court on May 20, 2021, and later sentenced to two years. She appealed with the Shenyang City Intermediate Court in June 2021 and is still awaiting the verdict.
Ms. Jiang was later sentenced to five years by the Huanggu District Court. But details of her sentencing wasn’t clear at the time of writing.
Past Persecution
Prior to her latest arrest, Ms. Jiang has been repeatedly arrested and incarcerated for a total of nine years for practicing Falun Gong.
She was arrested in 2000 and given a year at the notorious Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.
Following her other arrest on February 25, 2004, she was beaten, handcuffed behind her back and shocked with electric batons at the police station. The injuries on her legs were so severe that she was unable to walk by herself. After one month at the Zhangshi Brainwashing Center, she was transferred to the Shenyang City Detention Center, before being sentenced to eight years at the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison.
Ms. Xu was also repeatedly targeted for her faith in Falun Gong. She was arrested in early February 2020 and had her home ransacked. Her husband (who doesn’t practice Falun Gong) and their two children, Chen Xin and Chen Fei, were also arrested. Her husband was released hours later. As the local detention center refused to accept Ms. Xu and her two children due to the pandemic, they were later released to serve six months of house arrest.
Ms. Xu was later indicted and had her case moved to the Huanggu District Court. She was summoned to the court in August 2020 to answer some questions. To avoid being sentenced, she went into hiding, only to be arrested months later.
