(Minghui.org) A 75-year-old woman who became incapacitated after ten months of detention was tried through a video conference on January 11, 2023, for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body self-improvement discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liu Yumin, a former teacher in Laishui County, Hebei Province, was arrested at home on March 18, 2022. When her daughter-in-law tried to prevent the police from taking her away, the police pointed a gun at the younger woman, “Do you know she is on the wanted list? You are protecting criminals! I will arrest you if you dare to block us!”
After being taken into custody, Ms. Liu held a hunger strike in protest. She also refused to cooperate with the police interrogation. When her lawyer visited her at the Baoding City Detention Center on June 20, she was emaciated but was still in good spirits. She told the lawyer that she didn’t do anything wrong and that she hoped the police could understand the facts and stop participating in the persecution.
On July 5, 2022, the Laishui County Procuratorate moved Ms. Liu’s case to the Zhuozhou City Procuratorate, which then indicted her and forwarded her case to the Zhuozhou City Court.
By the time Ms. Liu was tried on January 11, 2023, she had developed dangerously high blood pressure. She struggled with severe dizziness and could hardly keep her balance. She could only walk with the support of two people. She also had severe leg pain and had lost a lot of hair.
Because Ms. Liu’s daughter had been deceived by the police into signing the case documents against her, the judge listed her as a “witness” and forbade her from attending Ms. Liu’s hearing. With her strong demand, the judge agreed for her to have a video meeting with Ms. Liu, on the condition that she tries to persuade her to plead guilty.
Ms. Liu’s daughter said that she was devastated to see her mother had become like that in less than a year. She said her reaction was very slow and she didn’t answer many of the questions she asked her. She said when her father, Mr. Wu Yanshui, died from persecution in 2001, he was in a similar state. She is now very worried about Ms. Liu’s condition.
Ms. Liu’s lawyer asked the detention center to release her for medical care or at least to allow the family to visit her, but his request was denied.
