(Minghui.org) A Wuhan City, Hubei Province resident was subjected to brutal torture while serving 7.5 years at the Fanjiatai Prison for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
In late 2022, Mr. Liu Shehong’s family learned from a newly released inmate that he had once been beaten by eight inmates, and his leg was broken as a result. Although the guards took him to the prison hospital for treatment, he still walks with a limp.
Mr. Liu’s family also learned recently that he was taken to a special training ward for even more intensified torture, as he refused to renounce Falun Gong. In addition to doing long hours of hard labor without pay, he was also subjected to savage beatings and forced to watch videos slandering Falun Gong. His family is calling on the international community to pay attention to his case and help stop the persecution.
Mr. Liu, 56, and his wife Ms. Zhao Xiujuan were arrested in Jingzhou City, Hubei Province on September 4, 2019, while living away from home to avoid the persecution. It was confirmed on December 3, 2020 that he was sentenced to 7.5 years in Fanjiatai Prison in Jingmen City of Hubei, and Ms. Zhao to 7 years in Hubei Province Women’s Prison in Wuhan.
From a Drug Addict to a Falun Gong Practitioner
Mr. Liu quit school when he was 16 years old and went to Wuhan to work at a timber processing company, then joined a gang shortly after. At the age of 26, he started taking drugs. He served a few prison terms for doing drugs, fighting, and swindling people. He was released in June 2004 and was soon terminated from his job. Within a few months he went back to drugs and started borrowing from friends, who in the end stopped giving him money and avoided him.
In his 40s, he had become an outcast in Wuhan, so he returned to his hometown in Xianning City of the same province in December 2006. His lifestyle had ruined his health. His complexion was dark, and he suffered from edema in both legs. He had difficulty walking. His mother cried all the time and his fellow villagers thought that he might die before the 2007 Chinese New Year. He began to borrow money from the villagers, and whenever he got money he bought drugs with it. His mother was very worried, but couldn’t help him.
In December 2006, his mother recommended to him that he practice Falun Gong. He did so, and in just four months he quit the drug addiction. His health recovered and his complexion looked much healthier. Living by Falun Gong’s principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, he no longer swore or fought with people, and he became a hard-working person who helped his family and others. Those who knew him were amazed by his changes.
Grateful to Falun Gong for giving him a new life, Mr. Liu tried his best to raise awareness about the persecution, hoping that more people could learn the facts and benefit from the practice.
Because of spraying information about Falun Gong in a public area in Jiangxia District, Wuhan City in May 2008, he was arrested and given an unknown term at Hewan Forced Labor Camp. The guards constantly beat him, as he refused to renounce Falun Gong.
Mr. Liu was arrested again in Wuhan in December 2010, also for spraying messages about Falun Gong. He was sentenced to four years by the Hongshan District Court in mid-June 2011 and also served time in the Fanjiatai Prison.
