Ms. Zhang Wei, a retired employee of the First Steelmaking Plant of Jinan Iron and Steel in Shandong Province, struggled with many physical conditions after serving three years in prison for practicing Falun Gong. She died on January 24, 2019. She was 67.
Ms. Zhang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in 1999. She was arrested and escorted back to Jinan. Her workplace detained her in a conference room without heat for over a month and arranged people to watch her around the clock. She was forced to pay over 3,000 yuan to cover the travel expense of those who went to Beijing to take her back.
After that, she was forced to work every day without any break. She wasn’t allowed to go home even during the Chinese New Year. During her parent’s birthdays, her workplace sent a car to take her there and then back after the gathering.
Once Ms. Zhang’s parents fell seriously ill and were hospitalized. But because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, her workplace kept her detained and didn’t allow her to care for her parents.
Although Ms. Zhang was allowed to go home in 2000, the authorities arranged stationed people to outside of her home to monitor her for over six months. On October 1, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal. Upon returning, she was arrested and detained for a month. Because she persisted in practicing Falun Gong, the police sent her to the Wangcun Forced Labor Camp for three years.
The authorities continued to monitor her daily life after she was released. She was arrested again on October 3, 2007 when she went out. The police hired a locksmith to break into her home and raid the place. She was held at the Liuchangshan Brainwashing Center for over four months and subjected to brutal beatings.
As Ms. Zhang remained firm in her faith after the brainwashing session, she was sentenced to three years at the Shandong Province Women’s Prison. She was constantly beaten by the guards and given toxic shots. Her body was swollen and covered with bruises.
Ms. Zhang struggled with poor health after being released in 2011. She remained in a confused state. She had persistent edema and declined vision. She also had difficulty talking and walking. Due to the toxicity of the drugs she was given, she always had large, dark, itchy abscesses. Her face also had cysts. Despite her condition, the authorities still arranged for people to monitor her. On January 24, 2019, she was found to have died at home.
