(Minghui.org) Minghui.org previously reported on the abuse of a Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang Province resident jailed at the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison because she practices Falun Gong. New information emerged that the abuse never stopped. Ms. Zhang Liping has now lost almost all of her teeth and struggles with poor health and confusion.
Ms. Zhang, 62 and a former landscape architect, was arrested on March 11, 2019, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was released on bail four days later and sentenced to nine years at an unknown time. She was taken back into custody and admitted to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison in June 2021.
The prison rotated Ms. Zhang through various teams in Division 8, including Team 4, Team 12, Team 10, and Team 8. Wherever she was held, she was subjected to relentless abuse at the hands of the guards and the inmates.
Abuse in Team 4
Guard Guo Lei was in charge of persecuting Ms. Zhang in team 4. Head inmate Ma Yiwen and inmates Han Jie and Xu Jun assisted her. They forced Ms. Zhang to take hypertension medications every day. (It’s not clear whether she had the condition.) They pried open her mouth when she refused to comply. Her incisors became loose as a result. Her screams were often heard in the morning.
Ms. Zhang was later kept in the cell and not allowed to step outside at all. The inmates got a chamber pot for her to relieve herself. Once she did Falun Gong exercises and the inmates tied up her hands using a bed sheet. They then hung her up by the wrists to the top bunk of a bunk bed. She felt excruciating pain.
Abuse in Team 12
When Ms. Zhang sat in the lotus position to meditate, inmate Han, who was also reassigned to team 12, tried to stop her. She refused to comply, so Han hit her in the face, knocking out her loosened incisors.
Han yelled, “I beat you! Report me to the guards! I have long wanted to stop monitoring you! Ask them to replace me!” She was initially set for release but had her term extended. The guards then assigned her to monitor Ms. Zhang. They reprimanded her when she was not “working hard” on Ms. Zhang. There were three high-definition surveillance cameras in the cell and Han dared not stop persecuting Ms. Zhang.
Abuse in Team 10
Guard Guo Linlin spotted Ms. Zhang meditating in bed one day and she forced her to sit on a small stool all night. The six inmates in the same team who were also made to stay up all night took out their anger on Ms. Zhang.
Abuse in Team 8
When Ms. Zhang sat down at noon one day to meditate, head inmate Li Miao tried to pull her legs but wasn't ale to. She then slammed Ms. Zhang head against the wall. Ms. Zhang felt sharp pain in the back of her head.
That afternoon Ms. Zhang felt dizzy and had to lie down. She then overheard inmate Qi Xin say, “After I’m released, I’ll report Falun Gong practitioners whenever I see one.” Ms. Zhang felt extremely sad that Qi would hold such a hostile attitude towards Falun Gong. She then went on a hunger strike for four days to protest the abuse.
On the fifth day, the guard on duty came after 6 p.m. to do a roll call. As soon as Ms. Zhang got off the bed, she collapsed and lost control of her hands. The guard took her blood pressure and it was over 200 mmHg.
Ms. Zhang was rushed to a hospital and diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage. In less than one week, she was brought back to the prison. The hospital doctor warned her to stay in bed for three months to prevent a second bleeding episode.
The prison did not allow Ms. Zhang to use a commode chair to relieve herself. She struggled with chronic constipation and requested a glycerin enema. Inmate Ma in team 4, who was in charge of dispensing medications, gave her the laxative only twice even though she needed it more often. When her condition became really severe, inmate Qi helped her manually extract her stool.
Another Falun Gong practitioner jailed in the same prison reported Ms. Zhang’s mistreatment to the head guard. Before anything could be done, Ms. Zhang was able to get out of bed. Due to the lack of care in her early recovery period, she lost function in one of her hands and could not hold anything. She needed people to take care of her. Later the prison arranged inmate Hu Hongyan to care for her and her situation improved somewhat.
With over four years left on her term, Ms. Zhang struggles every day due to her poor health. She lost almost all of her teeth and eating is extremely difficult. Her mind was often not lucid but she always remembers she’s a Falun Gong practitioner. She wanted to do Falun Gong exercises to improve her health but was not allowed.
