(Minghui.org) Two Chongqing women were recently sentenced for raising awareness of the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of their faith, Falun Gong.
Ms. Zeng Yunhui, a retired school teacher who lives in Banan District, was sentenced to fifteen months. Ms. Bai Shuzhn, in her 50s and a resident of Jiulongpo District, was sentenced to one year with one year probation.
Both women took up Falun Gong years after the persecution began in July 1999. Ms. Zeng began practicing in 2018 and Ms. Bai began practicing in 2020. They recovered from their illnesses and realized that Falun Gong was nothing like what’s depicted by the CCP’s hate propaganda. They informed the public of the illegality of the persecution, and were targeted for persecution.
Their wrongful conviction stemmed from their arrests on January 21, 2025, after they were reported for putting up self-adhesive stickers on a riverbank in Jiulongpo District, which had information about Falun Gong.
Both women were put in the Banan District Detention Center and issued formal arrest warrants by the Jiulongpo District Procuratorate on February 28.
Ms. Bai was later released on bail but Ms. Zeng remained in detention. They stood trial at the Jiulongpo District Court on June 23. Ms. Zeng had a lawyer but he was threatened by the local 610 Office. It is unclear if he was allowed to represent her in court.
Ms. Bai was taken back into custody after the hearing. Judge Qian Tao later convicted her and Ms. Zeng at an unknown time.
Prior to her latest prison sentence, Ms. Zeng was previously persecuted. She put up self-adhesive stickers which had information about Falun Gong in downtown Chongqing around September 28, 2024. Someone reported her to police, who identified her from surveillance videos. They raided her home and held her in a lockup for 14 days.
Not long after she was released, Ms. Zeng attended an open house and talked to the homeowner (seller) about Falun Gong. He reported her to police, who harassed her at least once afterwards.
