(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners who are sentenced to prison for their faith in Gansu Province are usually detained in the Seventh Division in Gansu Provincial Women’s Prison in Lanzhou City.

It is estimated that more than 500 practitioners were held in this prison from 2001 to 2024. While there, they are often verbally abused, physically tortured, and subjected to brainwashing. Most of them were emaciated and mentally disoriented when they were released. They often tremble with fear at the mention of the prison, and it often takes them a long time to get over the trauma.

Physical and Mental Abuse

Monitoring

The guards in the Seventh Division selected over 20 of the worst inmates to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. These inmates were instilled with hatred for Falun Gong, and they were instigated to use the most brutal methods they could think of to torture practitioners.

Some of those inmates include:

- Zhou Xiufen, in her 40s, convicted of murder, serving a 10-year term- Yan Fen, in her 40s, convicted of embezzlement, serving a 15-year term- Feng Chunling, nearly 50, convicted of financial irregularities, serving a 12-year term- Ma Yaqin, nearly 60, convicted of fraud, serving a 15-year term- Bi Wanli, in her 50s, convicted of financial irregularities, serving a 15-year term- Yang Jing, in her 30s, convicted of drug trafficking- Huang Yaqin, in her 50s, convicted of drug trafficking, serving a life sentence- Li Yan, in her 30s, an accomplice in a murder, serving a 5-year term- Wang Li, in her 30s, convicted of fraud and theft, serving a 4-year term- Jiang Xueying, in her 40s, serving a heavy sentence- Meng Haihong, in her 50s, convicted of operating a brothel, serving a 15-year term- Xie Daiying, in her 40s, convicted of embezzlement, serving a death sentence with reprieve- Peng Wei, in her 40s, convicted of drug trafficking, serving a death sentence with reprieve- Yang Aiping, in her 40s, convicted of drug trafficking- Yang Huiling, in her 40s, convicted of drug trafficking, serving an 11-year term- Yu Weiwei, convicted of fraud, serving a term of more than ten years

Their first day in the prison, the practitioners are subjected to relentless brainwashing. Inmates who didn’t want to work could pay the prison 20,000 yuan to be transferred to the Seventh Division to torture Falun Gong practitioners. They could earn 18 points for each practitioner they “transformed.” For those serving a three-year sentence, 100 points would mean a six-month reduction in their terms. For those serving a four-year sentence, 120 points would see their terms reduced by six months. The inmates do their utmost to earn those points.

The inmates assigned to monitor the practitioners are ordered to record everything they do and say, including when they get up and what they eat. The guards review the records regularly.

Whatever the practitioners do, they first have to get permission from the inmates monitoring them, including having meals, sitting down, going to bed, getting up, washing, or using the restroom. If the practitioners go to the restroom without permission, the inmates beat and verbally abuse them.

Intimidated After Admission

When practitioners are sent to the Seventh Division, several guards and inmates stand at the gates and order them to squat and answer the guards’ questions. If they refuse to squat or acknowledge they are “criminals,” the inmates pin them down and force them to squat and admit their “guilt.” If the practitioners still refuse to comply, they are taken to the guards’ office and shocked with electric batons.

Ms. Wang Anlin was stripped naked on her first day. She was body searched, and all her belongings, including toilet paper and laundry powder, were opened up.

When Ms. Wang Yuxia, 57, first arrived in the prison on July 24, 2017, the guard ordered her to repeat after him, “Criminal Wang Yuxia reports.” When she refused to comply, three guards each took an electric baton and shocked her eyes, nose, and mouth while an inmate sat on her to keep her from moving. She was severely burned and bleeding. The wounds oozed pus for almost six weeks.

Denied Visitation Rights

Ms. Jin Yijun was denied family visits after she was admitted to the prison on December 4, 2023. Even though her family went to the prison every month, they were never allowed to see her, with the excuse that she refused to renounce Falun Gong.

Implication

Implication is often used. When practitioners first enter the Seventh Division, they are ordered to sign the guarantee statements. If they refuse, everyone in the cell is forced out into the hallway. This continues until the practitioners write the statements. If a practitioner does not meet the captain’s expectations, no one in the cell will be allowed to have a nap after lunch, and everyone will be forced to stand.

Ms. Yan Ping was threatened and verbally abused by her cellmates when they were forced to stand because she refused to cooperate with the guards.

Each practitioner must always be accompanied by two inmates. If a practitioner walks around on her own, the prison will deduct points from her and forbid her from buying extra food, and the inmates who were supposed to monitor her will have their monthly 100-yuan stipend suspended and won’t be allowed to buy any food.

Inciting Hatred

Ms. Duan Xiaoyan from Qingyang City was sentenced to 10 years in July 2015 for telling people about Falun Gong. Guards knocked out her teeth and broke her back. They even called her son and tried to make him resent her by saying that she had ruined his future.

Forced Ingestion of Drugs

Ms. Li Dongmei was an associate professor at the Gansu Provincial Committee Party School. She was arrested on April 13, 2021, for telling people about Falun Gong and sentenced to four years. In prison, she was forced to take large amounts of psychiatric drugs for a long time. An inmate said that the division head had approved giving her injections. They deceived her, telling her that they were giving her nutritional supplements because she was so weak. After taking the drugs for four days, she developed low blood pressure, a slow pulse, dizziness, and sudden weight loss. She had difficulty sitting and became confused. She didn’t even realize that she had wet her bed. She was released in 2023.

Methods of Torture

Denied Use of the Restroom

Ms. Liu Wanqiu was admitted to the prison on May 11, 2017. She wasn’t allowed to use the restroom and had to relieve herself in her pants. The guards tied her to a bed in the spread-eagle position, leaving her soaked in excrement and urine. After a period of time, her lower body and buttocks became inflamed and infected.

Forced Overeating

At mealtime, practitioners were given large amounts of food and forced to eat everything. Ms. Zhang Xuelian, Ms. Qiang Weixiu, and Ms. Duan Xiaoyan were subjected to this torture. Ms. Duan now vomits when she eats porridge.

Squatting

If practitioners refuse to acknowledge their “crime” or follow the guards or inmates’ instructions, they have to squat all day, including when watching TV, writing thoughts reports, eating, and studying. The inmates monitoring them ensure they remain in the correct posture. Ms. Jiao Lili was forced to squat every day for more than a year.

If someone is slightly overweight or in poor health, it is hard for them to maintain the posture for even a day.

Solitary Confinement

The only “furniture” in the solitary confinement room is a tiger bench, which is a wooden strip 10 centimeters (four inches) wide and 1.5 meters (five feet) long, fixed in the middle of the room with a metal ring for handcuffs. The window is always covered to prevent people from seeing what is happening inside.

Those who are held in the confinement room are only allowed two meals a day of bran-flour steamed bread and water. The TV plays videos slandering Falun Gong 24 hours a day.

Ms. Ma Jun, in her 60s, from Lanzhou City was sentenced to 10 years. Because she refused to follow the guards’ instruction, she was locked in solitary confinement for 56 days. During the day, she was handcuffed to the tiger bench. At night, she was handcuffed to the death bed and unable to move. She was not given any blankets in the winter. Her nose ran due to the cold, but she couldn’t wipe it since she was tied up. When the inmates went in to check on her, they saw that the mucus had frozen on her mouth and neck.

Handcuffed

Ms. Zhang Ping from Lanzhou City was held in solitary confinement in January 2007. During the Chinese New Year, others noticed that her face and hands had become very swollen and deformed due to the cold. Because she refused be “transformed,” the guards handcuffed her behind her back. To make her suffer even more, an inmate pressed her head down to her knees.

Stand Facing the Wall

Ms. Han Zhongcui was deprived her of sleep and forced to stand still overnight every day for three months. Her legs became so swollen that they were as wide as her feet. She often fainted while standing.

Doused with Cold Water

Ms. Jin Jumei, who is handicapped, was often dragged to the restroom by the inmates and doused with cold water.

Forced Labor

Before 2007, the inmates were forced to work 14 hours a day without any rest after lunch or weekend breaks. After 2007, to earn more money, the prison took on the production of cheap clothing. The inmates and practitioners have to work an average of 20 hours a day. As a result of overwork, some fall asleep while using the sewing machine and the needle goes through a finger bone. Despite the injury, the inmates do not dare to speak up and continue working to avoid punishment.

Another job is to fold Joss paper into silver ingots, sometimes up to 6,000 to 8,000 ingots a day per person. Inhaling the material can cause significant damage to the lungs. Some inmates developed allergic reactions and red rashes and some suffered from ulcers on their hands. Those who can’t meet the quota, which keeps increasing, are forced to clean the cells, have their points deducted, or are not allowed to buy daily necessities. Some are beaten or shocked with electric batons. The prison also forbids the inmates from telling their family about the work.

Other jobs include washing seaweed, weaving nets and blankets, making hats, and peeling garlic.

Mouth Scrubbed with Toilet Brush, Face Sprayed with Urine and Feces

An inmate who was tasked with monitoring practitioners used a toilet brush to scrub practitioners’ mouths. Ms. Lyu Yinxia was once beaten with a toilet brush until her mouth bled and became swollen, and the brush broke.

In 2015, two inmates dragged Ms. Yang Wenxiu to the restroom. They pushed the toilet into feces before scrubbing Ms. Yang’s mouth.

Another inmate filled balloons with feces and urine. Then she poked holes in them and sprayed the practitioners’ necks, mouths, noses, eyes, and faces.

Force-Fed Food and Water

When Ms. Qiang Weixiu went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, she was force-fed twice a day. Inmates pinched her nose and cheeks; held her head, legs, and arms; pried her mouth open with a spoon; and poured the food into her mouth. Because she couldn’t breathe, she struggled, and food splattered all over the place.

Torture re-enactment: Force-feeding

The insides of Ms. Qiang’s cheeks were injured and she developed ulcers in her mouth. The skin on her nose was ripped. Once, they added a lot of salt to the food before force-feeding her. Her teeth also became loose from the beatings.

Ms. Zhang Ping was stripped down to her underwear, pinned down, and force-fed with at least 10 large bottles of water within three hours. She almost suffocated. Her mouth was torn and her face was swollen for over 10 days.

Starving

The quality of the food in the prison is very poor, and it is hard to eat much of it. While the inmates are allowed to buy extra food once a month, practitioners who refuse to “transform” aren’t allowed to buy anything and they are often starved.

Not Allowed to Shower, Buy Daily Necessities, or Wash Clothes

For a long period of time, Ms. Li Maowa was not allowed to bathe or use toilet paper, so she smelled. It is a common tactic used on practitioners.

Severe Beatings

Ms. Yang Jun was beaten for refusing to write guarantee statements. The inmates pinched her thighs and kicked her legs. They also wrote Falun Gong founder’s name on her face and the stool and then forced her to sit on it. If she refused, the inmates would verbally abuse her. A few inmates grabbed her thumb and pressed it on the guarantee statements. A guard also threatened Ms. Yang that she would be shocked with electric batons if she refused to listen. After they sealed the document with her thumbprints, they said to her, “You wrote this.”

Ms. Li Qiaolian was also beaten for not renouncing Falun Gong. The inmates grabbed her and slammed her head against the wall. Her face was bruised and swelled up, and her nose bled. She also suffered an intense headache.

Deprived of Sleep

Ms. Li Fang was once deprived of sleep for six days.

Nearly Drowned

Four inmates took Ms. Mao Xiulan to the restroom and beat her. When she screamed for help, they stuffed her mouth with a cloth used to mop the floor, grabbed her by her hair, and submerged her head into a bucket of water until she passed out. The inmates then kicked her upper body, legs, and back, and slapped her face. Her face became swollen, her whole body was shaking, and she had abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Mental Torture

Forced to Acknowledge Oneself as a ‘Criminal’

If the captain speaks to an inmate, the inmate must squat to listen. If the prison warden happens to walk past, the inmates must squat and say, “I’m criminal X.” Those refuse to comply are not allowed to use the restroom. All reports that the prison makes the inmates write must also end with “by Criminal X.”

Slandering Falun Gong’s Founder

Every practitioner is grateful to Falun Gong’s founder, so the guards and inmates write Falun Gong’s founder’s name everywhere to try to force the practitioners to “transform.” They want to make the practitioners have a mental breakdown from the abuse.

Ms. Sheng Chunmei was forced to write materials that slandered Falun Gong every day. She was slapped in the face if she refused to comply. If what she wrote was not up to the guards’ expectations, she was beaten. She could only sleep after the guards were satisfied with the report.

Ms. Sheng eventually became blind and deaf and developed diabetes and hypertension. Despite her condition, she was still forced to continue writing materials to slander Falun Gong every day and was beaten by the inmates.

Brainwashing and Writing Thoughts Reports

Every morning, practitioners are forced to attend “lessons” that consist of slandering Falun Gong’s founder. They also have to watch videos that slander Falun Gong. In the afternoon, they have to write thoughts reports and submit them by 10 p.m. on the same day. Those who can’t finish on time are dragged to the guards’ office and shocked with electric batons.

Ms. Li Mingyi from Gangu County was forced to attend the “lessons,” write thoughts reports, and submit them every night. If her report fell short of the guards’ expectation, she would be beaten in the restroom by the inmates. She was tortured every day and could not sleep; her head felt very heavy all day long.

Criticism Meetings

Criticism meetings are held in the lobby, where practitioners have to stand in front of everyone and be criticized by the guards. After the meetings, the inmate monitors treat the practitioners even worse.

Ms. Wang Lixia once talked about some of the crimes the Chinese communist regime committed in the past, including its political campaigns and the Tiananmen Massacre. The guards were enraged and criticized her in front of all the inmates.

The criticism meetings are held every month and at least seven or eight practitioners, sometimes 10, will be forced to renounce Falun Gong publicly every month. The prison administration bureau also reviews their thoughts reports. One month before their release, the practitioners have to give their “transformation” speech again. The prison keeps all the guarantee statements that they wrote against their will.

Practitioners who have been “transformed” are also forced to inform their family about it.

Forced to Sing Communist Songs and Swear an Oath

Inmates are forced to sing songs that praise the CCP.

The first Monday of every month, inmates have to gather in the field to raise their fist and swear an oath that they acknowledge their crimes. Those who do not comply are punished after returning to the cells.

Deaths

Ms. He Xuehua, 40, was admitted to the prison on July 12, 2003. Four days later, three male guards with electric batons threatened the prisoners. Ms. He fell from the fifth floor and died.

After being tortured in the prison, Ms. Zhao Fenglian was unable to eat for over four months before her death. When they force-fed her concentrated salt water, she passed out. Not wanting to be held responsible for her death, the guards sent her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The prison authorities released Ms. Zhao on bail to seek medical care. She died in December 2005.

Ms. Sheng Chunmei developed diabetes and became blind and deaf after months of torture in the prison. She was sent home in critical condition and died just over a month later on October 12, 2013.

Ms. Xu Huixian ended up in critical condition due to torture. After she returned home, her health continued to decline and she passed away three weeks later on July 8, 2016.

Ms. Wan Mingfen, who was verbally abused all year long, ended up in critical condition. When the prison told her family to take her to the hospital, she was diagnosed with over 10 ailment and passed away seven months later on July 30, 2017.

Ms. Bai Xianglan, around 83, of Yumen City, Gansu Province, was admitted to the prison in 2020 to serve a four-year term. She had to see the doctor often for her asthma. She died in the prison in early 2024.

Ms. Guo Caiping was forced to take unknown drugs and died on May 19, 2025. She was 74.

Ms. Li Qiaolian from Baiyin City was sentenced twice previously and tortured while incarcerated. In mid-April 2025, she started vomiting blood and was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. She died on September 12, 2025. She was 70.

Ms. Li was often forced to stand facing a wall for hours or slapped in the face, until she had a big bump on her head and black eyes. When she asked to go to the restroom, the inmate grabbed her by her hair and smashed her head into the restroom door. She almost fainted. She was also given unknown drugs.

When the inmate kicked Ms. Li in the legs and injured them, Ms. Li said it felt like her muscles were torn apart. She was in so much pain that she could not sleep. A year later, she still had not recovered. The other inmates often beat her if they thought she did not follow the rules. They spit on her and slapped her in the face. Her head and face were often bruised.

Disabled as a Result of Torture

Ms. Lu Huiqin became blind in one eye and deaf in one ear from the beatings in prison.

Ms. Guo Huifang was forced to stand for two months between two metal bars. Someone hit her lower back with a stool and she became disabled.

Ms. Qin Shixiu became deaf in one ear after two inmates beat her.

Ms. Liu Wanqiu’s hands became disabled after she was hung up and tied up.

Ms. Liu Rong became blind and her hip was fractured.

Ms. Duan Xiaoyan was shocked several times with electric batons and her front teeth were knocked out. Her lower back was injured, and she became disabled from waist down.

Ms. Yang Mei developed Kashin-Beck disease (a joint disorder) and could not walk.

Ms. Wang Yuxia’s arm was broken, her legs were deformed, and she became disabled.

Ms. Liu Yong went blind after being hit in the head. Her hip was fractured.

Ms. Lyu Guihua became disabled and was unable to take care of herself.

Ms. Li Xiulan was forced to take sedatives and her body became swollen after a period of time. She spoke incoherently and was mentally disoriented.

Ms. Han Zhongcui was severely injured. She could not see clearly and her limbs became stiff.

Ms. Zhao Changju was hit at least 10 times a day and sometimes more than 100 times. She was hit in the face and head. Her face became swollen and her teeth loosened. She became deaf and her head were full of bruises. Due to the long term torture, she was often in a mentally disoriented state and had slow reactions. She had severe impaired vision, stiff legs, and loss of balance. She could hardly walk and was incontinent.

Ms. Wei Fengling became emaciated from the torture. Her weight dropped from 60 kg to 45 kg (132 lbs to 99 lbs).
