A man in Suining County, Jiangsu Province, was arrested in June 2024 for practicing Falun Gong. About 3 to 4 days later, several officers were seen arriving at his home in 3 cruisers at night. They carried him out and put him on the ground. He was unconscious and foamed at the corners of his mouth. He died hours later.
Mr. Zhang Buhua, in his 70s, had no immediate family members. A distant relative arranged to have his body cremated.
Mr. Zhang was healthy and able to do farm work before his arrest by Qiuji Town Police Station officers. His sudden death was likely a result of abuse at the hands of the police.
Mr. Zhang took up Falun Gong before the persecution began in July 1999. Over the past two decades, he was arrested many times by officers from the Qiuji Town Police Station. Because he had no family to seek justice for him, he was beaten or intimidated every time he was arrested and detained.
Officers from the Wanglin Township Police Station arrested Mr. Zhang and another practitioner Mr. Shao Kailian days apart in 2019, on July 5 and July 16, respectively. They also raided their homes.
Xu Jun, Yan Dong, and Li Jun from the Suining County Domestic Security Office came to the police station to interrogate Mr. Zhang and Mr. Shao. They handcuffed the two practitioners and hung them up from a high place by the handcuffs, with their bodies suspended in the air.
The police next beat the two practitioners. The men were in excruciating pain and sweated profusely. As they held firm to their faith, the police wrapped a sandbag weighing over 132 pounds around each of their necks. They both soon passed out. Only then did the police stop the hanging torture.
Mr. Zhang and Mr. Shao regained consciousness after cold water was poured over them, only to be hung up again and beaten. Officer Yan even boasted that he had no mercy when he beat female practitioners, and had even less when he abused male practitioners.
After he was tortured for several days at the police station, Mr. Zhang was given one year of forced labor and Mr. Shao was taken to a detention center. Mr. Shao was found to have high blood pressure and denied admission.
Around July or August 2016, secretary Sun Yuansong and team lead Zhang Yanjun of Guanmiao Village, demolished Mr. Zhang’s outdoor restroom and cut down his trees. He condemned them for these illegal activities, only to be knocked down on the ground.
