A retired government official in Xichang City, Sichuan Province, died on April 21, 2024, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhao Yuling, 80, was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2001. She made a full recovery after taking up Falun Gong that year. Because of her faith, she was arrested on June 6, 2007 and taken to a brainwashing center in Chengdu (capital city of Sichuan Province, about 180 miles away). Chi and Chen Qi, two government officials in Xichang, travelled to Chengdu to “work on” Ms. Zhao at one point. The detention center later asked the duo to take Ms. Zhao back to Xichang but they refused. Ms. Zhao ended up being held at the detention center for two months.
After another arrest on September 9, 2010, Ms. Zhao was taken to the Tuohuang Detention Center. The police later moved her to a brainwashing center and held her there for about two months. They also extorted 1,200 yuan from her.
Around August 2021, four people from the local government showed up at Ms. Zhao’s home and attempted to make her renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply and they left. Four officers came the next day and she did not let them in.
Ms. Zhao had just gotten off a bus on the morning of July 15, 2022, when two plainclothes officers seized her. About five other agents next raided her home and confiscated her computer and Falun Gong books. She was interrogated at the Madao Railway Detention Center. Her relatives who worked in government agencies later bailed her out and did not allow her to have contact with other practitioners. She also faced constant harassment from the police. Her health kept declining and she was hospitalized a few times. She died on April 21, 2024.
