A 74-year-old resident of Yingcheng City, Hubei Province, died on November 23, 2023, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhan Liping, a retiree of Shuanghuan Chemical Group, credited Falun Gong for curing her heart disease, high blood pressure, stomach problems, nephritis, liver pain, Meniere’s syndrome, and slipped disc.
After the persecution began in July 1999, Ms. Zhan was arrested at least seven times and detained a total of over seven months. The police once also attempted to put her in a labor camp but she was denied admission due to poor health. To avoid being arrested again, she lived away from home for almost two years. Her older son was unable to cope and developed schizophrenia.
Ms. Zhan went to the provincial government in the capital city of Wuhan to appeal for Falun Gong on July 21, 1999 and was arrested. The police drove her to an unknown place and dumped her there. She managed to return home two days later and learned that the police raided her home the night before.
As soon as she returned home on July 23, 1999, the police deceived her into reporting to the local police station. She was interrogated for seven hours straight. The next night, she was taken to the Yingcheng City Second Detention Center. Her older son visited her on the third day and she almost did not recognize him. He had lost a tremendous amount of weight in just a few days. She knew that he was traumatized by her persecution. The detention center released her six days later after extorting 200 yuan from her for her living expenses.
Ms. Zhan was arrested a second time on September 30, 1999, and taken to the same detention center. She was again forced to pay 200 yuan for her room and board. Hours after she was released on October 14, 1999, the police took her to the Xinji Police Station and did not release her until her family paid a 5,000-yuan "guarantee fee," which would be forfeited if she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
The third arrest of Ms. Zhan took place on January 21, 2000 with her detained until May 24 that year. The Xinji Police Station again extorted 5,000 yuan from her family as a so-called guarantee fund. The Yingcheng City First Detention Center also forced her to pay 1,400 yuan for her living expenses.
Her younger son, who lived in Wuhan, returned to Yingcheng to celebrate the Chinese New Year (February 5, 2000). He was shocked to learn from his brother that their mother had been detained for her faith. The younger son later told Ms. Zhan that he dreaded calling home for fear of getting news that she was arrested again.
Ms. Zhan was arrested a fourth time on May 23, 2001 and brutally beaten during the arrest. She had bruises and wounds all over her body. She was then taken to the Yingcheng City First Detention Center. On July 17, 2001, she was in serious condition but the police still took her to the Shayang Labor Camp. She was denied admission and the police took her back to the detention center, which extorted 970 yuan from her and released her on parole three days later.
After she returned home, Ms. Zhan’s employer suspended her pension from July 1, 2001 to July 1, 2002, totaling 8,000 yuan.
The police arrested Ms. Zhan a fifth time on July 14, 2000 and held her at the Yingcheng City Second Detention Center for ten days. It was extremely hot and she was kept in a tiny cell with nine other inmates. The lidless chamber pot made things even more unbearable, and she almost suffocated from the heat and stench.
Ms. Zhan’s sixth arrest took place in mid-November 2001 and she was released nine hours later.
An officer and two women from Ms. Zhan’s former workplace showed up at her home on April 1, 2002 in an attempt to take her to a brainwashing center. She was not in and they instigated her neighbor to spy on her. She had to go into hiding. Her older son was so traumatized that he developed schizophrenia.
Ms. Zhan later returned home in 2004. At around 7 p.m. on July 2, 2008, four officers raided her home but did not arrest her.
Ms. Zhan was arrested a seventh time on July 6, 2012 and detained at the Yingcheng City Lockup for ten days. Her husband went to seek her release and their older son, with no one to care for him, started a fire and caused nearly a thousand yuan in damages.
Ms. Zhan and her husband could not do full-time jobs as they needed to watch their older son around the clock. Their lost income and the medical bills amounted to 800,000 yuan of debt.
