A 54-year-old physician in Jixian County, Heilongjiang Province, died on August 29, 2018, after suffering years of persecution for his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Tang Xueyong, his wife, and her mother took up Falun Gong at the end of 1995. After the persecution began in July 1999, he and his wife went to Beijing to appeal on February 2, 2000. They were arrested and taken to the Jixian County Detention Center. The police also raided the couple’s home, terrifying their four children. The couple’s bankbook with a balance of more than 70,000 yuan, as well as 6,800 yuan in cash, were confiscated.
Mr. Tang and his wife went on a hunger strike in protest. The police released his wife four days later but took him to the Dalishi Forced Labor Camp to serve a one-year term. He was released ahead of time in December 2000.
Mr. Tang’s wife sought the return of the confiscated cash and bankbook, but the police threatened to arrest her again. They also deceived her then 12-year-old daughter to sign a statement saying Mr. Tang’s clinic had medications that failed to meet government regulations. They then forced his wife to take them to the couple’s bank and withdraw 28,000 yuan as a fine.
Mr. Tang was arrested again in May 2001 and given three years of forced labor at the Suihua Forced Labor Camp. The guards there tied him in a bed in a spread-eagle position for six days, during which time they also beat him and shocked him with electric bataons. They laced his food and drink with unknown drugs, leaving him confused and dazed.
After he was released in May 2003, he took a test to get re-licensed, but the 610 Office refused to sign off on the paperwork even though he passed the exam. He was deeply traumatized and experienced further decline in his mental health. He had seizures at the slightest provocation and often foamed at his mouth. He later didn’t even recognize his family and friends. He’d have seizures four or five times a day, sometimes when he was walking or using the restroom.
No treatments helped. After another seizure in 2011, he fell and broke his hip. He remained bedridden afterwards and died on August 29, 2018.
