A 71-year-old woman in Qingyang City, Gansu Province, died on November 9, 2022, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Jin Xiulan went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in April 2000 and was arrested. After she was escorted back, officer Zhang Xiaohua punched her on the forehead and slammed her head against the wall repeatedly. Her forehead became swollen. The next day, she was put in the Xifeng Detention Center to serve a one-month criminal detention.
During her detention, the police paraded Ms. Jin and 15 other practitioners at a local fair to humiliate them. They were then criticized at a public meeting attended by elementary and middle school students. Ms. Jin was fined 1,200 yuan and forced to pay 150 yuan to cover her living expenses at the detention center before being released.
Ms. Jin was arrested again on July 15, 2000, and held at a brainwashing center for an unknown amount of time. The police raided her home in November 2000 and held her in the Xifeng Detention Center for one month.
Ms. Jin went to Beijing in January 2001 to appeal for Falun Gong. She was arrested and taken to a detention center. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was force-fed. The police often hung her up and poured cold water all over her. They shocked her with electric batons and later forced her to sit on a stone bench for three nights. They didn’t stop the torture until she revealed her name and address. She was then taken back to Gansu and held at the Xifeng Detention Center for one month before being transferred to a drug rehabilitation center.
The police gave Ms. Jin an unknown forced labor term on February 12, 2001, and she was admitted to the Pingantai First Forced Labor Camp that day. Team lead Hu Xiuqin hit her on the chin, which became swollen and bruised. Hu also instructed drug addicts to knock Ms. Jin down and stomp on her. She was in so much pain that she struggled to breathe for over a month. Hu still forced her to do hard labor and also cuffed her for three days. For three days in a row, she was beaten 3-4 times a day.
Ms. Jin was also hung up with her feet off the ground for up to 10 hours on more than one occasion. After she was let down, the guards instructed drug addicts to hit her in the back. She couldn’t straighten up afterward. The guards also shocked her with electric batons. She passed out and the guards poured cold water on her to revive her.
The police raided Ms. Jin’s home on June 23, 2008. She was not in and went into hiding to avoid being arrested. After she returned home in 2013, she was soon arrested, and many of her valuables were confiscated.
Ms. Jin was harassed at home on July 13 and July 27, 2020. The police took photos her against her will. They returned on August 5, 2020, and left after taking a looking through her rooms. The harassment intensified starting on October 12, 2020, and she was harassed around 12 more times in a short period. Whenever she was not at home, the police forced her husband to go to their relatives’ homes to see if she was there.
The relentless persecution took a toll on Ms. Jin’s health. She died on November 9, 2022.
