(Minghui.org) After a Tieling City, Liaoning Province, resident was admitted to prison to serve a 2.5-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong, her husband was so devastated that he had a stroke and became incapacitated.

Ms. Liu Lili, around 59, was sentenced on July 10, 2024, with her term commencing on May 20, 2024, the date she was detained. Prior to her latest persecution episode, she had been repeatedly targeted over the past few years for her faith, which has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

A group of officers broke into Ms. Li’s home at around 5 a.m. on July 11, 2019, and confiscated her Falun Gong books, informational materials, computer, cell phone, and bank cards. As she had difficulty walking due to polio, the police carried her into their cruiser. They ordered her to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong at the police station. As she refused to comply, they took her to the Tieling City Lockup and threatened to sentence her if she still remained firm in her faith. She was fined 3,000 yuan and released ten days later.

Ms. Liu was arrested again on July 6, 2023, after being followed by officers from the Huangqizhai Village Police Station while putting up Falun Gong posters. Three other practitioners who went with her, including Ms. Yang Yukun, 63, Ms. Su Changqin, 78, and Ms. Chen Yongfen, 76, were also arrested. They were all taken to the Kaiyuan City Police Department and interrogated overnight. While Ms. Su and Ms. Chen were released the next afternoon, Ms. Liu and Ms. Yang, who also has a physical disability, were taken to the Tieling City Lockup and released 15 days later, on July 22.

During Ms. Liu’s detention, the police also arrested her son, Mr. Zhang Yiming, a taxi driver who doesn’t practice Falun Gong, on the evening of July 15, 2023, and held him at the police station overnight.

Wang Yi and Liu Jiansheng, the director and deputy director of Kaiyuan City Domestic Security Division, led eight officers from the Xiafeidi Police Station to break into Ms. Liu’s son’s home on the morning of October 19, 2023 to arrest her. Terrified by the police, she fainted and was taken to the hospital for resuscitation. She was later released on bail.

Only two weeks later, on November 3, 2023, the police took Ms. Liu, her son, Ms. Yang, and Ms. Su to the Changtu County Procuratorate to sign the three women’s bail release documents. During the arrests, Ms. Su experienced severe dizziness and vomited; Ms. Liu was twitching and then fainted. Yet officer Wang of the Kaiyuan City Domestic Security Division accused them of faking.

The Changtu County Procuratorate later indicted Ms. Liu and forwarded her case to the Changtu County Court. It is not clear whether Ms. Yang and Ms. Su were indicted.

Ms. Liu was taken back into custody at the Tieling City Women’s Detention Center on May 20, 2024. She experienced high blood pressure due to mental distress.

The Changtu County Court held a hearing of Ms. Liu’s case on July 9, 2024, and sentenced her to a 2.5-year prison term the next day. She was later admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison.

Dealt a blow by her sentencing, her husband suffered a stroke and became bedridden. Their son is now under tremendous pressure taking care of him while juggling a full-time job.
