Guangdong Man Loses Appeal of Four-Year Sentence

April 19, 2025 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Guangdong Province, China

(Minghui.org) A man in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, recently lost his appeal against a four-year prison sentence for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Mr. Huang Ruhong

Mr. Huang Ruhong, 65, was arrested at his son’s home in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong, on September 20, 2023. The police revealed that someone reported him for putting up adhesive stickers with information about Falun Gong on them the night before.

Prosecutor Huang Jieying and her assistant Kuang Yunqi of the Haizhu District Procuratorate indicted Mr. Huang and forwarded his case to the Haizhu District Court on March 14, 2024. He was tried on August 8, 2024, and sentenced to four years and fined 5,000 yuan on October 29, 2024.

Mr. Huang appealed to the Guangzhou City Intermediate Court. Presiding judge Zhou Tianyue ruled on March 20, 2025, to uphold his original verdict without a hearing or informing his lawyer. He also accused Mr. Huang of being a “repeat offender” due to his previous prison and labor camp terms for practicing Falun Gong. Judges Chen Juntao and Tang Junguo, as well as court assistants Cao Zhongwei and Guo Siyun, also signed the ruling.

Prior to Mr. Huang’s latest sentence, he was given two years of forced labor on May 16, 2007, and sentenced to three and a half years with a 10,000-yuan fine following another arrest on July 17, 2017.

According to an insider, the trial courts in Guangzhou City must submit their proposed verdicts against Falun Gong practitioners to the Guangzhou City Intermediate Court for review before issuing a ruling. Having effectively ruled for the lower courts, the intermediate court routinely denies practitioners’ appeals against their wrongful convictions. No Falun Gong practitioner in Guangzhou City has ever won an appeal case over the years, nor have any of their requests for an open appeals hearing been honored.

The judges who handled Falun Gong cases at the Guangzhou City Intermediate Court include Ding Yangkai, Huang Minqia, Liu Weihong, Huang Jian, Wang Jing, He Chunzhu, Hu Peng, Chen Juntao, and Tang Junguo. Several assistants to the judge, including Liu Yao, He Rongrong, Wu Qingyun, Wang Shiting, Cao Zhongwei, and Guo Siyun, were also involved.
