(Minghui.org) Mr. Li Hui, 49, from Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, stood trial on April 3, 2025 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Mr. Li, who is a plumber and an electrician, was arrested at 7:30 a.m. on October 24, 2024, as soon as he stepped outside his apartment building to go to work. The police said they would release him after they questioned him about something, only to take him to the Yongxing County Detention Center. Yongxing is under the administration of Chenzhou City.

Mr. Li’s arrest was triggered by that of another Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Xu Yunyan, whom he hired to work for his business. Mr. Xu was arrested in Yongxing County around July 2024, while he read the Falun Gong teachings with other practitioners. The police discovered a wire transfer record from Mr. Li to Mr. Xu from the latter’s WeChat (a social media app which has a mobile payment function) account and claimed the money was used for Falun Gong activities (when it was the wages that Mr. Xu earned from working for Mr. Li).

The Yongxing County Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Mr. Li on November 26, 2024. His case was later transferred to the Suxian District Court in Chenzhou City. He stood trial on April 3, 2025 and is currently awaiting a verdict.

This is not the first time that Mr. Li has been targeted for his faith. He was given two back-to-back one-year term of forced labor in 2000 and 2001, respectively. After another arrest in 2004, he was sentenced to three years in prison and finished serving time on March 12, 2007.

Mr. Li’s latest detention devastated his family. His mother in her 70s suffers from dementia and his father, almost 80, has stroke complications and is totally incapacitated. Mr. Li’s wife thus cannot work and struggles to care for her parents-in-law and two minor children. The family relies on the older couple’s meager pension to get by.

Mr. Li’s wife brought his parents to seek his release but the relevant government agencies either refused to meet with her or gave her the runaround. She took a taxi to the Yongxing County Domestic Security Division (about one hour away) on April 10, 2025 and asked officer Guo Zhicheng, who was responsible for arresting Mr. Li, what was wrong with her husband practicing Falun Gong. Her father-in-law shouted that the police were thugs and arrested good people.

Guo called Mr. Li’s local community and asked them to come pick up his wife and parents. They refused to ride with them and took a taxi home.
