(Minghui.org) After Ms. Fan Shufen finished serving a seven-year term because she practices Falun Gong in September 2024, she was denied low income subsidy and was sent to a senior center by her children. They threatened to stop paying for her expenses if she continues to practice Falun Gong.

Ms. Fan, a 76-year-old resident of Bayan County, Heilongjiang Province, was arrested on September 28, 2017, when she went to visit another practitioner Ms. Wu Guizhi. It happened that the police were raiding Ms. Wu’s home. Due to Ms. Wu’s heart condition, the then 71-year-old woman was denied admission to the local lockup and released on September 30. Ms. Fan was put on criminal detention.

Ms. Fan and Ms. Wu were tried by the Yilan County Court on the morning of July 19, 2018 and were sentenced to 7 and 8 years, respectively.

After Ms. Fan was released from the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison in September 2024, she applied for the low-income subsidy. The official who handled her application rejected her, and claimed it was because she practiced Falun Gong.

Influenced by the communist regime’s hateful propaganda against Falun Gong, Ms. Fan’s children strongly opposed her continuing to practice. Her daughter-in-law threatened to divorce her son, her son choked her and they all blamed her for bringing shame to them. They often called her an “old political inmate” and beat her.

Ms. Fan’s children later sent her to the Jingxin Senior Center, where she shared a unit with three other seniors. The monthly fee was 700 yuan. Her children asked the senior center’s owner to prevent Ms. Fan from meeting with other Falun Gong practitioners. The owner also searched Ms. Fan’s room and threw away her Falun Gong books. She and other tenants in the senior center discriminated against Ms. Fan; they often ridiculed her and told her to practicing Falun Gong. Ms. Fan’s children threatened to stop paying for her living expenses if she didn’t renounce Falun Gong. The senior center’s owner also threatened to evict her if she didn’t receive the payment in time.

Ms. Fan now lives in fear and is under tremendous pressure. She also struggles with very poor hearing, which resulted from the abuse in the prison.

Ms. Fan has been living with financial predicament since the onset of the persecution in 1999, after she was forced to live away from home due to the objection from her husband in practicing her faith. She was unable to find a job and relied on picking trashes. She lived in a poor rental place and couldn’t afford heating in the winter. She later applied for low income subsidy and low-income housing. But only after a few years, she was arrested and sentenced to prison, eventually losing both the low income subsidy and housing benefits.
