(Minghui.org) Less than two months before the end of his three-year prison term, a 73-year-old man became critically ill and was rushed to emergency care several times. His family was not allowed to visit him in person nor see him virtually.

The Tailai Prison in Heilongjiang Province has also denied Mr. Wang Wen’s medical parole request and insists that he complete his full term.

This is not the first time that Mr. Wang, a resident of Keshan County, Heilongjiang Province, has been jailed for his faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Mr. Wang and his wife, Ms. Li Guixiang, also a Falun Gong practitioner, were previously arrested at home on November 25, 2015. Mr. Wang was held at the Keshan County Detention Center and Ms. Li at the Qiqihar City Detention Center.

The Keshan County Court tried the couple on December 16, 2016. Their lawyers entered not guilty pleas for them. The couple testified in their own defense, as well. Ms. Li recounted how she was deceived by the detention center guards. She had scabies in detention, and her cellmates reported this to the guards for fear of getting infected. The guards promised to release her if she wrote statements to renounce Falun Gong. She did, but was still detained for a few more months. She said she regretted having written the statements and expressed her determination to keep practicing Falun Gong.

Only four family members, including the couple’s two sons, one daughter, and a nephew, were allowed to attend the trial. Nearly 30 people, who had no relation to the couple, were arranged to fill the rest of the gallery seats. The couple’s other family members stood outside the courthouse during the proceeding and were threatened by an agent from the 610 Office. He warned them not to tell local Falun Gong practitioners about the couple’s trial or they’d be arrested.

The couple were both sentenced to four years, with Mr. Wang taken to the Beian Prison and his wife to Qiqihar Prison.

Ms. Li later died as a result of the long-term persecution.
