(Minghui.org) An 83-year-old Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province, resident was seized at home at 9 a.m. on June 12, 2025, by eight police officers. She was taken to the police car in a wheelchair.
While the police claimed that they were taking Ms. Liu Huiju for a physical examination, she hasn’t returned home since. Her family suspects that the authorities likely intended to have her serve a 1.5-year prison term in 2021 for her faith in Falun Gong. They are calling for her release.
Ms. Liu began to practice Falun Gong on June 26, 1996. She credits the practice for enabling her to recover from various ailments, including a heart condition, arthritis, and insomnia. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, she was repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on May 12, 2021, and her home was ransacked. The police later released her on bail and put her on residential surveillance. They submitted Ms. Liu’s case to the Shuangyashan City Procuratorate in August 2021, which indicted her and moved her case to the Shuangyashan City Court.
The mental pressure from the persecution took a toll on Ms. Liu’s health. She developed persistent high blood pressure and a relapse of a heart condition. Because she wasn’t able to travel, the judge and the prosecutor tried her at her home on November 30, 2021. She was later sentenced to 1.5 years with a 1,000-yuan fine. Given her physical condition, the court didn’t immediately order her to start serving the term. Now, more than three years later, Ms. Liu is back in custody, and her whereabouts remain unknown. Her loved ones suspect she might have been made to start her prison term.
