When Ms. Li Xilian completed a 3.5-year prison term in May 2019, her family and friends were shocked to see a totally different person than they knew. She was pale and emaciated. She staggered while walking and no longer recognized people. Her husband later noted that she only had the intelligence of an eight- or nine-year-old child.

Ms. Li’s ordeal stemmed from her arrest on December 19, 2015, while distributing informational materials exposing the Chinese communist regime’s persecution of her faith, Falun Gong. She was sentenced to three and a half years on January 15, 2016, and transferred from the Huichun Lockup to the Yanjin City Detention Center. As further punishment, the authorities suspended her pension and had the local court fire her daughter-in-law, who worked in the court cafeteria.

During detention, Ms. Li became very weak and coughed violently. After she was admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison in early April 2016, she was found to have tuberculosis. She soon lost about one-third of her body weight. Despite her condition, the prison refused to release her on medical parole.

Ms. Li, a retired elementary school teacher, was still healthy with a straight back at the time of her arrest. Her loved ones were saddened to see a different person after she was finally released in May 2019. She remained incapacitated in her final years. Her memory never recovered.

Her husband, who was paralyzed on one side of his body, struggled to care for her physically and financially (her pension was never reinstated). After his passing, the couple’s son and daughter-in-law sent Ms. Li to a nursing home as they had to work and couldn’t take care of her during the day.

Ms. Li broke her leg at the nursing home in late 2024 and became completely bedridden. She died about six months later, on May 2, 2025. She was 73.

Ms. Li’s passing capped her years of suffering amid the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong. Besides her prison sentence, she was given one year of forced labor in 2008. The local labor camp declined to admit her after she failed the required physical examination. She was then released.

After another arrest on November 6, 2012, Ms. Li was taken to the Huichun City Detention Center, where she was abused to the point of being on the verge of death. Her husband was forced to pay 3,000 yuan in exchange for her bail release in late December 2012. The police kept harassing her at home after that.

Upon learning that she was to face trial soon, Ms. Li went into hiding in May 2013, only to be arrested again on November 13 that year. Six days later, she was found to have heart disease and tuberculosis. The guards once slammed her to the ground, causing her to pass out. She was eventually released on bail, but was arrested again on December 19, 2015, and later sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
