(Minghui.org) A man from Shulan City, Jilin Province, was abused to the point of developing life-threatening medical conditions while serving a four-year term for practicing Falun Gong. The prison authorities approved Mr. Zhu Yujun’s medical parole request, but its supervising agency (exactly which one is not known) denied it.
Mr. Zhu is incapacitated after suffering a stroke and heart failure. He also has diabetes and other heart conditions. He is now being held at the Gongzhuling Prison Hospital.
Mr. Zhu was arrested on June 5, 2024, during a police sweep in which more than 50 other Falun Gong practitioners were arrested. The health of one of them, Ms. Feng Yuqiu, quickly declined after she was arrested and she passed away three months later on October 9, 2024. She was 73.
Mr. Zhu was given criminal detention at the Shulan City Detention Center. An insider reported seeing two guards beat him. One of the guards said, “This guy refused to answer questions and deserves to be beaten.”
Mr. Zhu was later found to have some heart conditions and was hospitalized for a while. The detention center filed a request to have him released on bail, but the same agency that denied the prison hospital turned it down.
Mr. Zhu was tried by the Shulan City Court in late October 2024 and was later sentenced to four years. He was admitted to the Gongzhuling Prison on December 18, 2024. Given his frail health, he was put in the prison hospital.
It was recently confirmed by Minghui.org that Mr. Zhu’s health further declined in recent months. He used to be able to sit in a wheelchair but is now bedridden. Yet the prison denied his medical parole request.
Past Persecution
This is not the first time that Mr. Zhu was targeted for his faith. Formerly a prosecutor for the Shulan City Forestry Procuratorate, he was recognized as a promising young talent by his coworkers. After the persecution began, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in December 1999. He was arrested and given one year of forced labor. He appealed and later lost his job.
He was arrested again on October 10, 2003 and sentenced to forced labor. Due to his poor health, the local labor camp rejected him five times. When the police tried to have him admitted a sixth time, the labor camp finally admitted him.
After he was released, Mr. Zhu and his wife moved to Jilin City, Jilin Province, and opened a deli restaurant. The police arrested him on October 18, 2013, and took him to the Jilin City Detention Center. He was hospitalized due to the abuse he received there. He was sentenced to five years in September 2015. He was brutally tortured at the Jilin Prison and was hospitalized again. His condition kept worsening after he was released. At one point he was in critical condition but he gradually recovered.
Mr. Zhu later moved back to Shulan City, only to be arrested again on June 5, 2024, and sentenced to four years.
