A Shanghai woman was abused and developed cancer while serving a 4.5-year term for her faith in Falun Gong. The prison authorities did not release her on parole until two months before the end of her term. Her cancer had metastasized to her liver by that time, and she died a month later in May 2025, at the age of 77.

Ms. Wang Quandi was arrested on December 24, 2020, for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. She was sentenced to four and a half years on an unknown date. When the guards at the Shanghai Women’s Prison abused her, she went on a hunger strike in protest. She was later diagnosed with cancer but was never treated. After her cancer spread to her liver, the prison authorities finally released her on parole around April 2025. She died a month later.

Two Prior Prison Terms

This was not the first time that Ms. Wang had been incarcerated for her faith. She was imprisoned twice before for practicing Falun Gong.

Following an arrest on November 2, 2007, Ms. Wang was sentenced to three years and served time in the Shanghai Women’s Prison. She refused to put on the prisoner’s uniform and was brutally tortured.

The guards often held Ms. Wang in solitary confinement for long stretches, during which time they subjected her to a restraint torture. They wrapped a towel around her mouth and tied her up with a leather belt. One of her arms was in front and the other behind her back. After being restrained like that for a long time, she lost feeling in her arms, which became stiff and atrophied due to lack of blood flow. The guards kept her tied up even during her sleep. On visitation days, her family could call her but not see her in person. They were not allowed to purchase food for her either.

After another arrest on March 19, 2014, Ms. Wang was sentenced to seven years on July 18 that year. She was again ordered to serve time in Shanghai Women’s Prison. The guards subjected her to the same types of torture. They held her in solitary confinement and she later went on a hunger strike in protest. At one point she became critically ill and was rushed to the Shanghai Prison General Hospital. After three years in the hospital, her weight dropped to about 35 pounds (19 kg). Her family was still not allowed to visit her.

Ms. Wang was released ahead of time in 2019, only to be arrested in December 2020 and given a third prison sentence of four and a half years.

Earlier Persecution Episodes

Prior to her three prison terms, Ms. Wang was targeted earlier in the persecution. She was given one year of forced labor in early 2000 for doing the Falun Gong exercises in public. She was in the first group of Falun Gong practitioners in Shanghai to be given forced labor camp terms.

Under pressure, Ms. Wang wrote statements to renounce her faith. After she was released, she published a solemn declaration on Minghui.org in February 2001 to nullify those statements. The police and street committee harassed her frequently after finding out about her declaration.

The police broke into Ms. Wang’s home on April 17, 2001, and arrested her, leaving her then-80-year-old mother unattended. She was held in a brainwashing center for several months.

Ms. Wang’s next arrest was on December 26, 2002. She was detained until the end of January 2003. Not long after, she was arrested again on February 11, 2003, and taken to the same brainwashing center.

During the 2005 Chinese New Year holiday, Ms. Wang was arrested on February 7 and detained until March 10 of that year.
