(Minghui.org) Two women in Macheng City, Hubei Province were sentenced to prison on August 28, 2025 for their faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Hu Bibo, 49, was sentenced to three years and fined 3,000 yuan. Ms. Fang Hongbing, 61, was given three months.
Both women were arrested on May 29, 2024, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. They were interrogated at the Zhongyi Town Police Station and transferred to the Huanggang City Detention Center the next day. The police searched their homes a day later on May 31, and didn’t find any Falun Gong-related materials.
Below are details regarding Ms. Hu’s prosecution. Information about Ms. Fang’s prosecution isn’t yet available.
Ms. Hu’s Prosecution
Prosecutor Zou Li of the Macheng City Procuratorate approved Ms. Hu’s arrest on July 1, 2024 and submitted her case to the Macheng City Court in September 2024.
Ms. Hu stood trial on November 7, 2024. Judge Yang Zuoyi threatened her lawyer, saying that many other lawyers who had defended Falun Gong practitioners had had their professional licenses revoked. Ms. Hu’s lawyer wasn’t deterred and entered a not guilty plea for her. Ms. Hu also testified in her own defense. Judge Yang frequently interrupted the lawyer during his defense statement.
After five months of detention, Ms. Hu was very weak and she wasn’t given any food on the day of the hearing. She went into shock and collapsed when the hearing resumed in the afternoon. Her husband, Mr. Wang Guangbing, took a photo of her as evidence of her ordeal and was detained for several hours as a result.
Before Ms. Hu came to, the judge and prosecutor took off. The police covered Ms. Hu’s head with a hood and took her back to the detention center.
The judge scheduled another hearing for December 13, 2024. It’s not clear whether it actually took place. He convicted Ms. Hu on August 28, 2025, without her presence and without informing her family.
Ms. Hu remains at the detention center and hasn’t been allowed any family visits since her arrest fifteen months ago.
