(Minghui.org) A 63-year-old woman in Gaizhou City, Liaoning Province, has had her pension suspended since 2019 because she was jailed for practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Wang Guixiang took up Falun Gong in November 1998 and soon recovered from her weak heartbeat, colitis, chronic rectal bleeding, and lung infection. After the communist regime started persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly arrested. Her home was raided three times and all her valuable belongings were seized. Her husband was unable to cope with the pressure and divorced her.
Ms. Wang took a 15-year unpaid leave from her work in 2002. In May the next year she sold her house and moved around with her daughter to avoid being arrested. Her daughter died in a car accident.
Ms. Wang was arrested on June 28, 2016, while living in Dashiqiao City in the same province. She was sentenced to one and a half years in prison in November that year. See the related report for details of her arrest and sentencing.
After she was released at the end of 2017, Ms. Wang moved back to Gaizhou City and rented a place. As her 15-year leave expired that year, she applied for retirement with her employer, the Gaizhou City Hospital. They initially refused to process her application but relented after her persistent efforts.
About two years later, the hospital suddenly notified Ms. Wang that they had to suspend her pension (monthly payment of around 3,000 yuan) per a “policy” that retirees who served prison sentences should be deprived of pension. No labor law in China has such a stipulation.
Six years have since passed and Ms. Wang’s pension is still not reinstated. She has no other income and struggles to survive.
