An 81-year-old woman in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, died on October 2, 2025, after enduring 26 years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Tang Yuhua was repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith. She was given a labor camp term in the early years of the persecution, while she was working in Hubei Province. She served time in the Shayang Forced Labor Camp.
Ms. Tang later moved to Xi’an City, Shaanxi Proince. She was arrested at home on October 13, 2010. The police raided her place twice and confiscated her Falun Gong books. She was detained at the Xi’an City Detention Center for an unknown amount of time.
Ms. Tang and her husband later immigrated to Canada with their daughter and obtained permanent residency there. However, her husband fell ill years later and moved back to China. Ms. Tang also returned to China to look after him, only to be arrested again on January 18, 2016. Due to her husband’s condition, she was released after a few days.
The police arrested Ms. Tang again in late February 2016 and held her in custody at the Ankang Hospital. The Chanba Police Department approved her arrest and submitted her case to the Baqiao Procuratorate. She was later sentenced to three years and ten months by the Baqiao Court. While she was serving time at the Shaanxi Province Women’s Prison, her husband passed away.
Ms. Tang’s last arrest was on August 16, 2021, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. The arresting officers from the Taohuatan Police Station raided her home and took away her Falun Gong books, laptop, and a photo of Falun Gong’s founder.
In addition to being arrested, Ms. Tang also faced constant harassment by the local police and lived in fear. The harassment continued even after she had a stroke in early 2024. Her condition deteriorated further and she eventually passed away on October 2, 2025.
