(Minghui.org) A woman in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, was sentenced to four years in December 2025, because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Li Yanping, 63, was initially arrested in late October 2024, after she was reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. She refused to cooperate during the physical exam required for detention and she was released the next day.
Several officers were stationed outside Ms. Li’s apartment building to monitor her beginning on February 11, 2025. They also went inside her home to harass her from time to time. More than once they cut off her power and water supply. Several officers broke into her home on February 15, 2025, and arrested her. Her son, Mr. Zhao Nan, was also seized as he videotaped the arrest with his cell phone.
The police held Ms. Li at the Tangshan City First Detention Center and later submitted her case to the Leting County Procuratorate. Prosecutor Zuo Qiang soon approved her arrest and transferred her case to the Luannan County Procuratorate on May 9, 2025.
Ms. Li appeared in the Luannan County Court on November 28, 2025. The judge sentenced her to four years and fined her 6,000 yuan on December 3. She filed an appeal with the Tangshan City Intermediate Court, after receiving her verdict on December 9. The appeals court accepted her case on January 12, 2026.
Ms. Li took up Falun Gong in 1998 and recovered from a severe slipped disc in just a few months. She held firm to her faith after the persecution began in July 1999. She was repeatedly arrested prior to this latest persecution episode. She was once paraded through the street and given an unknown term of forced labor in 2004. The Kaiping Labor Camp refused to admit her and she was taken to a brainwashing center instead. After she was arrested in 2010, she was sentenced to four years in prison.
Ms. Li’s husband, an active service member, feared being implicated and divorced her in a military court. Their son chose to live with her but lived in fear because she was repeatedly arrested.
