With his wife deceased 24 years ago in the persecution of Falun Gong, and his son tortured into a mental breakdown after serving two labor camp terms, a man in his 80s died alone at his rental apartment in September 2026.
No one knows exactly when Mr. Du Guoming, of Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province, died. It was only when his neighbors smelled the stench of a corpse that they found out about it, and they then worked with the residential committee to arrange his funeral.
Mr. Du and his son, Mr. Du Weifeng, were both employees of the Lingyuan Steel Company. In the second half of 1993, Mr. Du’s wife, Ms. He Guihua, experienced prolonged vaginal bleeding and was diagnosed with uterine cancer. No treatment had any effect on her. Just as the family had lost hope, the founder of Falun Gong offered a class in Lingyuan in February 1994. The entire family attended the lectures, and Ms. He soon recovered.
Their peaceful life was shattered when the Chinese Communist Party launched the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999. For upholding their faith, the family was repeatedly arrested, detained, and harassed. Both the father and son were given two labor camp terms at the Chaoyang City Forced Labor Camp.
In the labor camp, the younger Mr. Du was forced to do heavy labor, while enduring brainwashing and various forms of physical torture. He suffered from severe depression and was then released. In less than a year, just as he had recovered, the police arrested him again and put him back in the labor camp. He was subjected to frequent electric shocks and solitary confinement. The torture caused him to suffer a mental breakdown and eventually resulted in permanent mental disability.

Mr. Du Guoming also endured brutal torture in the labor camp. On June 17, 2001, the guards shocked him with three electric batons for over half an hour until the batteries died. He screamed in pain and sustained severe burns.
While the father and son were both detained, Ms. He constantly worried about them and faced non-stop police harassment herself. The mental distress caused her uterine cancer to relapse in 2001. By October 2002, she was so weak that she could not eat or drink. She didn’t even have the strength to talk. At the request of her family, the labor camp released her husband and allowed him to spend seven days with her. She died at midnight on the seventh day. She was 57.
After Mr. Du Guoming was released, he was in a confused and delirious state. With his son in a psychiatric hospital as a long-term patient, he lived a destitute life on his own until he died in September 2026 in the rental property.
