Young Practitioner: Practicing Dafa Saved Me From the Slippery Slope of Modern Social Trends

Oct. 18, 2026 |   By a Falun Gong practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) About 15 years ago, a relative of mine fell seriously ill. After seeking medical help everywhere to no avail, he met a Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) practitioner who shared the truth about Dafa and the persecution, and he began practicing Falun Dafa.

Within less than a year of his taking up the practice, the chronic illness that had plagued my relative for years completely vanished. This story spread throughout our extended family, and thus I learned how wonderful Falun Dafa is.

I was still in elementary school at the time. I was not fooled by the “Tiananmen Square self-immolation” hoax written about in my textbooks, and remained skeptical of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) various propaganda campaigns.

I would often find informational booklets about Dafa near my home, and made a point of reading them carefully whenever I picked one up. Although I didn’t learn how to circumvent the Great Firewall [Chinese internet censorship system] until my second year of high school, I could still see past the CCP’s propaganda.

In my sophomore year of high school, the time for me to begin cultivation practice drew near. A few of my classmates enjoyed watching Japanese anime using an internet circumvention tool, so I got a copy of the software and tried it when I went online at home that weekend. It worked without a hitch.

I began using Google to search for keywords like “Falun Gong” and “Minghui.org,” and was able to successfully access these websites that had been blocked by the Chinese regime.

Later, I remembered the “Freegate” software often mentioned in the truth-clarification pamphlets I had read, so I downloaded a copy. Since then, I only visit websites run by Falun Gong practitioners when I go online, and no longer have to put up with the CCP’s internet propaganda.

While browsing The Epoch Times website one day, I came across an article with a comment that read something like this: “Zhuan Falun is a ladder for humanity to ascend to heaven.” I had kept a copy of this book in my desk drawer for a long time, but never actually read it. That sentence on my computer screen instantly piqued my interest, so I decided to read the book from cover to cover.

I read the entire book in one sitting, and suddenly everything became clear. I found answers in the Fa to many questions that had previously troubled me—this was how I came to obtain the Fa. I understood the meaning of life, and I learned how to be a good person—and an even better one.

Later, after reading books such as Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party and The Ultimate Goal of Communism, I came to fully recognize the evil nature of the CCP and realized that all the chaos currently plaguing Chinese society stems from the Party’s deliberate destruction of morality and traditional culture. With this new understanding, I developed a deep interest in traditional Chinese culture and began to view it in a positive light.

Young people in China today, influenced by the various chaotic phenomena of mainstream society, especially the internet, have become obsessed with short videos and video games.

They often use incomprehensible internet slang or even foul language, lack basic respect for others, and fly into a rage or blame everyone and everything else over trivial matters. One can no longer see any trace of refinement or poise in them.

I remember in college, my roommates would often stay up late playing video games or watching short videos. The next morning, I was the only one who would get up early, so I ended up being the one cleaning the dorm room.

During this year’s Lunar New Year holiday, my middle-school-aged cousin and his parents came to stay at my house. The boy’s situation is truly concerning—his grades are terrible. While he was at my house, he spent all his time scrolling through TikTok and playing video games, swearing while he played. It was really upsetting to hear, and his parents don’t know how to deal with the situation.

Even more alarming is that an increasing number of middle-aged and elderly people have become addicted to short videos. These videos are saturated with worldly pursuits like fame, fortune, and lust, and are negatively influencing the speech, behavior, and values of the older generations.

When I worked in Beijing, I had lunch at different restaurants every day and often saw people watching short videos on their phones with the volume turned up loud. The content ranged from fake news fabricated by the CCP and skits advocating “fighting evil with evil” to so-called “life philosophies” that encourage the pursuit of fame and wealth, as well as various materials featuring unmistakably AI-generated voices.

While the people around me seemed to find endless amusement in this, I felt deeply saddened whenever I heard those sounds, lamenting how far society has degenerated.

In contrast, I gave up things like short videos and video games early on in my cultivation practice. Previously I used foul language and swore at others, but since taking up cultivation, I have not lost my temper or cursed.

I was frequently ill as a child and was a regular visitor to the hospital, yet I haven’t been to hospital since I began cultivating. All this makes me feel incredibly fortunate. Had I not practiced Dafa, I probably would have drifted with the tide in the giant melting pot of ordinary society.

I am deeply grateful to Master for enabling me to become a Dafa disciple, allowing me to cleanse myself through Dafa cultivation, and find my true self.
