A 59-year-old woman in Yingcheng City, Hubei Province, had a heart attack on October 6, 2026, and died later that day.
Months before her passing, Ms. Du Zuying was harassed in-person by Dongmafang Town Police Station officers at least twice, and on the phone by local Yidong Community staff member numerous times. They threatened her, telling her not to practice Falun Gong anymore.
The relentless persecution she experienced for her faith in Falun Gong eventually claimed her life.
Prior to the latest harassment episodes, Ms. Du and her husband, Mr. Xiong Wende (also known as Xiong Wenzhi, an employee of 728 Salt Manufacturer), suffered repeated persecution for practicing Falun Gong. Ms. Du was also fired from Shuanghuan Company, a chemical manufacturing company.
Officers He Zhongping and Liu Qiang from the Xinji Police Station arrested Ms. Du in July 2001 and placed her in the Xiaogan City Psychiatric Hospital even though she had no mental illness. There, she was forced to take psychiatric drugs against her will. Seven or eight people pinned her down, titled her head back, and covered her nose. They then pried open her mouth and forced her to take psychiatric drugs. They ordered her to stick out her tongue afterwards to ensure she had swallowed the pills. Such involuntary drug administration took place four times a day.
When Ms. Du’s husband visited her at the hospital, she said to him, “I would never commit suicide. If anything happens to me, it must be that the hospital has done something to kill me.”
Ms. Du was not released from the hospital until one month later. The long-term daily drugging caused long-lasting damage to her brain. She never fully recovered and needed assistance in taking care of herself.
Zuo Yongan from the Yingcheng City Domestic Security Office brought two officers and a locksmith to Ms. Du’s home at around 7 p.m. on July 2, 2008. They pried open the door and ransacked her home for nearly two hours.
The police attempted to arrest Ms. Du but Mr. Xiong stopped them. They twisted his arms behind his back. He was in so pain that he was unable to speak. Mr. Xiong was arrested.
Mr. Xiong managed to escape from the Yingcheng City Police Department two days later. He had to live away from home for nearly two years to avoid arrest. Ms. Du struggled to take care of herself in his absence.
Over ten officers raided the couple’s home on November 7, 2017, including Lu Hengfei from the Dongmafang Town Police Station, Lu Hongzhou and Yu Meng from the Yunmeng County Domestic Security Office, and Yu Qingbo from the Hanchuan City Domestic Security Office. Wang Feng, a staffer from the Yizhong Community, was also present.
Lu held Ms. Du tight, and four other officers seized Mr. Xiong. Another officer video recorded the whole process.
Mr. Xiong was put in the Yunmeng County Lockup the next day. Ms. Du went there and noted the detention notice bore two signatures of “hers,” but she’d never signed any paperwork. Deputy chief Zhou Xiao of the Wuluosi Police Station, who was in charge of the case, claimed that it was sufficient to simply notify her of her husband’s detention over the phone and that the police could sign on her behalf.
Mr. Xiong was transferred to to the Tangxunhu Brainwashing Center on November 21, 2017, where he was held for one month, then moved to an unknown facility. The Anlu City Court sentenced him to two years in September 2018, and he was admitted to the Fanjiatai Prison.
Community staffer Wang called Ms. Du in mid-December 2021 to harass her. He later came to her home and threatened her not to practice Falun Gong.
Officers from the Caidian District Police Department in Wuhan City arrested Ms. Du on May 7, 2022, and interrogated her at the Dongmafang Town Police Station.
Wang called Ms. Du in late May 2022 and ordered her to report to the Tian’e Brainwashing Center on June 3 that year. She refused to comply. The Dongmafang Town Police Station officers arrested Mr. Xiong weeks later on June 21 and put him in the brainwashing center instead.
Dongmafang Town Police Station officers harassed Ms. Du at home at least twice in 2026. Wang and other community workers also called her numerous times to threaten her before her passing on October 6, 2026.
