A woman in Fushun City, Liaoning Province continued facing non-stop harassment after she finished serving a wrongful prison term for practicing Falun Gong. The mental distress took a toll on her health and she passed away on April 6, 2026. She was 70 years old.
Ms. Yu Hailan
Ms. Yu Hailan was arrested at home on April 24, 2018, along with her two sisters, Ms. Yu Haiping and Ms. Yu Haiqiu, and another practitioner, Ms. Zuo Yuhua. The police confiscated Ms. Yu Hailan’s Falun Gong books, laptop, and 5,400 yuan in cash.
The practitioners were taken to the Fushun City Detention Center, then stripped to their underwear and forced to go through physical exams in front of a male doctor and guards. Each practitioner also had two tubes of blood drawn from them. (Correction: An earlier report from 2018 incorrectly stated that they were strip-searched at the Jianshe Police Station.)
The detention center guards ordered Ms. Yu Hailan to write statements to renounce and denounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply.
Ms. Yu Hailan was tried by the Wanghua District Court on September 6, 2018, and was later sentenced to one year and a half years with a 3,000-yuan fine. Her sister, Ms. Yu Haiping, was tried on September 14, 2018, and later sentenced to two and a half years with a 5,000-yuan fine.
Shortly after Ms. Yu Hailan’s conviction, the Fushun City Social Security Bureau suspended her pension payments.
Ms. Yu Hailan became unable to walk as a result of being physically abused at the detention center. The guards ordered her family to take her to see a doctor on January 3, 2019, but the hospital refused to provide her exam report to her family.
Ms. Yu later took a fall at the detention center and fainted. She was taken to the hospital for treatment. The doctor found that her lumbar spine on the left side was curved.
Despite her condition, Ms. Yu was nonetheless admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on February 19, 2019, in a wheelchair. She also suffered from persistent high blood pressure.
After Ms. Yu was released on October 23, 2019, the local police and residential committee staffers continued to harass her. She suffered a stroke on December 1, 2022, and become incontinent and paralyzed. She had heart failure and went into a coma in mid-October 2025. She passed away on April 6, 2026.
