55-Year-Old Heilongjiang Woman Sentenced a Third Time for Practicing Falun Gong

Oct. 21, 2026 |   By a Falun Gong practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Wu Xi, 55, in Fangzheng County, Heilongjiang Province, was sentenced to two years because she practices Falun Gong, Minghui.org learned recently.

Ms. Wu was arrested on the morning of December 4, 2025, while she was on her way to a fair. After she gave a passerby a calendar which had information about Falun Gong, a black sedan suddenly drove up. Several plainclothes officers from the Gaoleng Town Domestic Security Office emerged from the car and seized her and Ms. Yu Su’e, a 76-year-old Falun Gong practitioner who was with her.

The police raided Ms. Yu’s home that night and confiscated her Falun Gong books and other valuables. They then went to the home of an elderly person for whom Ms. Wu worked as a home aide. They didn’t find anything they wanted and went to Ms. Guan Yuqin’s home and opened the door using the key they found in Ms. Wu’s bag. Ms. Guan, who also practices Falun Gong, had given Ms. Wu a copy of her home key.

The three practitioners were taken to a hospital for physical exams. Ms. Yu and Ms. Guan were deemed unfit for detention and released. Ms. Wu was taken to a detention facility in Harbin City, which oversees Fangzheng County. She was later transferred to another facility in Boli County, Heilongjiang Province.

Gao Qiang, one of the arresting officers, along with Li Xiang, later submitted the case to the Boli County Procuratorate. The Boli County Court sentenced Ms. Wu to two years, and she was admitted to the Songbin Prison in Harbin City. Other details of her prosecution are unknown.

Ms. Wu has a bachelor’s degree from the Changchun University of Science and Technology and a master’s degree from Jilin University. She once taught at the Jilin University. After she began practicing Falun Gong in 1997, she recovered from irregular heartbeat and atrophic gastritis. Prior to her latest persecution episode, she was arrested multiple times for holding firm to her faith and she served two prior prison sentences totaling six and a half years.

Three Arrests Between 2000 and 2002

Ms. Wu went to Beijing in July 2000 to appeal for her right to practice Falun Gong. She was arrested and escorted back to Heilongjiang. She was held in the Gaoleng Town Detention Center. Director Piao Chun and guards subjected her to various forms of abuse, including being beaten, hung up, and made to run for hours.

One time, Piao hit her, while guard Jin slapped her face. Guard Song then kicked her from behind, knocking her down on the ground. Her head struck a stone lion when she fell and she was injured. Another group of guards then showered her with kicks and punches.

When Ms. Wu still refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong, Piao had her sister come to the detention center to beat her. Her employer terminated her, and her boyfriend broke up with her. Her father’s pension was also suspended. Before she was released, the local 610 Office forced her to pay a huge fine.

Ms. Wu made another trip to Beijing in the winter of 2001 and was arrested again. While held at the Xicheng District Detention Center in Beijing, she refused to reveal her identify and went on a hunger strike in protest. The guards restrained her in a bed and force-fed her. They didn’t allow her to use the restroom and inserted a urinary catheter into her. They kept the catheter in for many days.

Ms. Wu was twice rushed to a police hospital for emergency care. She was later given one and half years of forced labor at the Tuanhe Labor Camp, which declined to admit her because she was severely underweight. The police released her on the 93rd day of her hunger strike. Her father and brother carried her out of the detention center.

The police in Changchun City, Jilin Province, arrested Ms. Wu in January 2002 while she was living there temporarily. They restrained her in a metal chair in a torture chamber. They covered her head with a plastic bag until she almost suffocated. They put the bag back on her head and removed it only when she almost passed out. They repeated this torture many times. They also kicked and punched her, burned her with cigarette butts, and pinched her fingers.

This interrogation with torture went from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The police then drove her to the Changchun Third Detention Center, which refused to admit her. She was taken back to the police station and subjected to more torture. She foamed at the corners of her mouth. Only then did the police take her to a hospital. She had almost no signs of life. The police notified her sister to pick her up. She quickly recovered by doing the Falun Gong exercises and reading Falun Gong’s teachings.

Stripped of Household Registration and ID in 2010

In 2010, the Fangzheng County Forest Bureau transferred out Ms. Wu and her father’s household registration with them [China’s household registration can be attached to an employer]. To this day, the father and daughter do not have a place to accept their household registration. As such, they have no IDs either, rendering them unable to secure full-time jobs.

Two Prior Prison Terms Totaling 6.5 Years

Ms. Wu was arrested again in 2017 for producing Falun Gong informational materials. The Songbei District Court in Harbin City sentenced her to three years in December that year and she was sent to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison.

She was next arrested in 2021 after she was reported for distributing information about Falun Gong. Officers from the Shangzhi Police Station put her in the Harbin City Lockup for 15 days. She was transferred to the Harbin City Second Detention Center for criminal detention. She was later sentenced to three and a half years. While she was serving time at the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison, the guards punished her cellmates when she refused to renounce Falun Gong. The cellmates thus blamed her for making their life miserable. They beat her so hard that they almost broke her spine. She was released on November 19, 2024, only to be arrested again on December 4, 2025.
