A woman in Bayan County, Heilongjiang Province, was diagnosed with cancer while serving an eight-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong. She was admitted to a hospital and died in just a few days around late February 2026. She was 80.
Ms. Wu Guizhi’s prison sentence stemmed from her arrest at home on September 28, 2017. She was released on bail after a court hearing on July 19, 2018. The Yilan County Court sentenced her to eight years in February 2019. She was soon taken back into custody and admitted to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison on March 12, 2019.
Ms. Wu’s family was not told when she was diagnosed with cancer or whether she was rendered any medical care in the prison prior to her hospital admission. They also don’t know what abuse she suffered that might have contributed to her health decline.
Prior to Ms. Wu, at least two other elderly Falun Gong practitioners serving time at the same prison died in custody in recent years.
Ms. Mou Yongxia, 75, died on July 13, 2023, while serving a six-year term. She was brutally tortured and eventually unable to keep food down. Yet the guards accused her of “going on a hunger strike.”
Ms. Li Yuzhen, 74, died in early January 2024 while serving a four-year term.
