A woman in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province passed away on February 3, 2026, after enduring decades of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. She was 79.
Ms. Wang Shifan, a retired accountant with the Saichenghu Reclamation Farm, took up Falun Gong in 1996, together with her husband, Mr. Lu Zhenxiang, an electrician at the fish farm. They soon experienced health and moral improvement. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, the couple were repeatedly targeted for upholding their faith. Mr. Lu was arrested at least seven times, and his pension was suspended starting in the early 2000s. He died in 2016, at the age of 71.
Below are details of the couple’s persecution.
The couple went to Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, in 2002 to visit their daughter. Officers from the Saichenghu Police Station in Jiujiang followed them and arrested them there. Ms. Wang was given three years at the Majialong Forced Labor Camp. Mr. Lu was sentenced to five years in the Jiangxi Province Men’s Prison. He was subjected to long term brainwashing and forced to work without pay. He nearly died before he was released.
Ms. Wang was arrested on the evening of May 7, 2008, while studying Falun Gong teachings with other practitioners. She was given another 1.5-year forced labor camp term by the Economic Development District Police Department. While she was serving time at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Forced Labor Camp, the guards laced her food with unknown drugs. She experienced frequent dizziness, headaches, and difficulty moving. These symptoms persisted until her death.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lu faced frequent harassment after he was released from prison in 2007. He was forced to live away from home in the summer of 2010. Due to the persecution over the years, he developed severe diabetes and eventually became blind. Most of his teeth also fell out. He was very weak and unable to care for himself. He passed away on February 19, 2016. He was 71.
While mourning her husband’s death, Ms. Wang faced continued harassment, which intensified in 2024 and 2025, by officers from the Yongan Police Station and Zhangjiadu Community Office. Her home was raided several times, and she was terrified. She died on February 3, 2026.
In addition to the arrests, detention, and harassment, the couple were subjected to financial persecution. After Ms. Wang reached retirement age in 2002, the Jiujiang County Labor and Personnel Bureau refused to process her retirement application. Her employer also stopped her pay after her pension application. It took until 2005 for the Jiujiang County Social Security Bureau to start issuing her a monthly 600 yuan in pension payments, which was 60 yuan short of what she should have received given her years of service.
Mr. Lu never received any of his pension. They got by on Ms. Wang’s meager pension. They repeatedly appealed to the authorities, but to no avail.
