(Minghui.org) A 76-year-old woman from Jingzhou City, Hubei Province, was injected with toxic drugs while detained for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 1999.
The detention center drew two large tubes of Ms. Deng Tianyu’s blood and injected her with unidentified experimental drugs. She convulsed after the injection and rolled around on the floor in excruciating pain. She was in agony for more than two months.
Shortly after, Ms. Deng was transferred to Hankou Prison to serve a five-year term. She continued to be subjected to involuntary drug administration and torture.
After she was released on October 18, 2025, the authorities continued to harass her on a regular basis. Her pension was also suspended. Ms. Deng still suffers weakness in her limbs and struggles to take care of herself after what was done to her in prison.
Below are more details of what she endured.
Arrested and Sentenced
Ms. Deng was arrested by the head of the 610 Office in the Shashi District and several police officers on October 18, 2020. She was interrogated for 48 hours, which made her blood pressure shoot up. The Shishou Detention Center admitted her anyway. She was transferred to the Jingzhou City Detention Center on November 3, 2020.
Li Li, deputy chief of the Jingzhou City Detention Center, told Ms. Deng in May 2021 that she had been sentenced to five years. It’s not clear whether a trial ever took place before she was convicted. Li added that there was only one day left for her to appeal, but that she was not allowed to appeal.
Injected With Unknown Drugs
On July 7, 2021, the detention center guards drew two large tubes of blood from Ms. Deng and then injected her with unknown drugs. She convulsed violently, and bumps formed in her mouth and on her head—the bumps on her head are still there today. She rolled around on the floor in agony and was in pain for over two months. They took two additional tubes of blood from her on September 2.
An insider once revealed that Ms. Deng was given an experimental drug to treat AIDS.
Subjected to More Torture in Prison
Admission Team
Ms. Deng was put in the admission team of Hankou Prison on September 14, 2021. She had her blood drawn on September 14, October 2, and in November 2021, two large tubes each time.
Ms. Deng refused to call herself a criminal during roll call. From September 17, 2021, onwards, she was forced to stand in a corner of the hallway and not allowed to sleep. She was also ordered to write a guarantee statement to renounce her faith, which she refused to do. Inmates,Xu Jingjing and Zhou Fengling beat Ms. Deng and stomped on her feet while she was standing.
Ms. Deng noticed small, brownish-green particles in her food, and the rice turned light green as she was eating. She later learned that the particles were drugs that damage the nervous system. When she then refused to eat, the inmates force-fed her.
The inmates wrote the name of Falun Gong’s founder on Ms. Deng’s chair and made her sit on it. They also tried to force her to fingerprint the guarantee statements they wrote for her. She refused to comply and said that she would not accept any statements that they wrote on her behalf.
As a result of the torture, Ms. Deng’s hands and legs become very swollen, and her shoe size went from a 38 (US size 7) to a 42 (US size 10). She also became emaciated.
Strict Management Team
Ms. Deng was transferred to the Third Division, also known as the strict management team, on December 28, 2021. Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, the inmates forced her to stand for long periods of time, beat her, and deprived her of drinking water. The prison authorities also tried to get her son and daughter-in-law to persuade her renounce her faith.
Ms. Deng was often humiliated and verbally abused and beaten for hours on end. In the strict confinement room, she was hung up with her toes barely touching the ground. She was given very little to eat. In the winter, the guards poured water over her, opened the window, and left her to freeze. In the summer, they shocked her on the chest with electric batons. The guards and inmates also wrote the Falun Gong founder’s name on her bed and forced her to sleep on it.
In September 2022, under the instigation of the guards, the inmates force-fed Ms. Deng feces. Ms. Deng couldn’t handle it and wrote her name on the guarantee statement against her will. She was transferred to the Fifth Division for the disabled and infirm shortly after.
Fifth Division
The prison authorities invited 610 Office officials to the prison on September 22, 2023. They set up a camera and ordered Ms. Deng to declare her position. However, she refused to defame Falun Gong, and condemned the CCP for persecuting it.
In retaliation, the guards forced Ms. Deng to hand-copy propaganda materials smearing Falun Gong. They also forced her to stand, deprived her of sleep, and would not let her buy daily necessities.
Due to the relentless abuse, Ms. Deng became very weak. On July 3, 2024, she fainted while cleaning the cell. Her cellmates saw that her mouth was drooping on one side. She was taken to Hanyang Hospital and diagnosed with a stroke. She was injected with unknown drugs and became paralyzed 10 days later. After the inmate monitoring her in the hospital delayed calling the nurse when the IV drip had finished, Ms. Deng’s shoulder turned purple and hard and swelled up.
Ms. Deng was released on October 18, 2025. The social security bureau suspended her pension and even ordered her to return the funds she had received during her prison term. They claimed that she was not qualified to receive retirement benefits if she was convicted, although there is no Chinese labor law with such a stipulation.
Two community workers harassed Ms. Deng in January 2026. They threatened her, saying she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about the torture she suffered.
Ms. Deng still has multiple bumps on her head, she feels weak, and her left arm is sore. She is unable to walk normally and has difficulty caring for herself.
Past Persecution
This is the third time that Ms. Deng, born in 1950, has been sentenced for her faith. She was first arrested on March 6, 2001, for distributing informational materials to expose the Tiananmen self-immolation hoax. The guards at the Sha City First Detention Center beat her so severely that her left retina detached and she went blind in that eye. The vision in her right eye also deteriorated.
Ms. Deng was first sentenced to three years in the Hubei Province Women’s Prison on December 14, 2001. The guards once forced her to stand for 15 days without drinking, sleeping, or using the restroom. In another torture session, they hung her up by the wrists from the window frame and exposed her to the sun. She was also hung up from the beam of the prison cell with her toes barely touching the ground for seven days.
The second time, Ms. Deng was sentenced to four years following another arrest on July 5, 2008. She was taken back to the Hubei Province Women’s Prison on May 12, 2009. The guards force-fed her toxic drugs, which made her temporarily delirious.
