81-Year-Old Shandong Woman Jailed for 9 Months for Practicing Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) An 81-year-old woman in Jinan City, Shandong Province, was released on February 7, 2026, after serving nine months for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Ms. Wu Yumei took up Falun Gong in 2005 and soon recovered from stroke complications and other illnesses. She felt compelled to inform the public that Falun Gong was nothing like what’s being depicted in the communist regime’s hate propaganda. While distributing Falun Gong informational materials on November 17, 2022, she was spotted by a plainclothes officer who forced her to have her ohoto taken while she held the materials.

The local detention center declined to admit Ms. Wu given her advanced age, and the police released her on bail. The Laiwu District Procuratorate indicted her at an unknown time, and the Laiwu District Court sentenced her to eight months in 2023. She was ordered to serve time at the local detention center, which declined to admit her three more times. She was then allowed to serve time outside of prison.

Officers from the Huayuan Police Station arrested Ms. Wu again on May 10, 2025, and forced the detention center to admit her. She was transferred to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison on July 2 that year. The guards instigated the inmates to beat and verbally abuse her. Her term was extended by one month, and she was released on February 7, 2026.
