A 63-year-old woman in Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, died on May 11, 2026, less than six years after she completed a four-year term for practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu Yuzhuo was no longer the outgoing, unrelenting, and sharp person she once was when she was released from prison on June 27, 2020. The torture and mental trauma she suffered in custody took a heavy toll on her health. She gradually lost commission of her limbs and her mobility. In her final years, she remained bedridden and completely relied on her family for care. She was unable to speak clearly or understand what others said to her. She was completely paralyzed, able to only move her eyes.
See the related reports for details of Ms. Liu’s latest prison sentence (June 28, 2016 – June 27, 2020) and abuse in prison, as well as a two-week detention in 2012. The rest of this report covers details of her earliest arrest, in 2003.
Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison in 2003
Two officers from the Dongfeng Police Station broke into Ms. Liu’s home on June 5, 2003, and arrested her and her guest, also a Falun Gong practitioner. Chief Liu Yingchao, officer Song Qian, then 610 Office head Lin Qing, and Zhanqian District Police Department director Li Changyu, took turns interrogating the two women.
They were put in the Yingkou City Lockup the next day. Ms. Liu was transferred to the Yingkou City Detention Center 14 days later. The case status of her guest was unknown.
Lin and Yuan Chunguang interrogated Ms. Liu many times at the detention center. She refused to answer their questions. They submitted her case to the Zhanqian District Procuratorate. Prosecutors Fan Xuefeng and Liu Baolin then charged her with “using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement,” a standard pretext used to frame Falun Gong practitioners.
Ms. Liu was forced to do hard labor every day at the detention center. Once, she used her own money to purchase a shirt for another detained practitioner. The detention center director Zhu Yingjie handcuffed her for three days as punishment.
The Dongfeng Police Station deceived Ms. Liu’s husband into giving them 2,000 yuan and one pack of cigarettes (worth 110 yuan) in the name of securing his wife’s bail release. Ms. Liu was not released, and her husband demanded the money back. The police station threatened to detain him too since he also practiced Falun Gong. They added that if he wanted his wife to get a lighter sentence, he’d have to give each of the seven judges on the collegial bench 5,000 yuan.
Ms. Liu’s husband paid the court 35,000 yuan. She was eventually sentenced to six months. By then she had been detained for six months and should have been released. The Yingkou City Political and Legal Affairs Committee and 610 Office refused to free her, and her husband had to pay another 15,000 yuan to secure her release. On top of the mental stress and the financial burden, he struggled to take care of their daughter, who was preparing for middle-school exams, and their son, an elementary school pupil.
Ms. Liu, who worked for a private company before her 2016 arrest, was denied pension insurance after she was released, which worsened her family’s financial struggle.
