Liaoning Woman Jailed After Losing Appeal Against Wrongful Sentence for Her Faith

May 22, 2026 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 69-year-old woman in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on April 15, 2026, to serve a four-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wang Shuhua

Ms. Wang Shuhua was arrested on August 23, 2025, after being reported by a woman for talking to her about Falun Gong. Ms. Wang was indicted on September 24 and stood trial on November 19. The prosecutors only called a prosecution witness to the stand but did not present any other prosecution evidence during her trial. The judge convicted Ms. Wang six days after her court hearing.

Ms. Wang filed an appeal with the Shenyang City Intermediate Court on December 3, 2025. She asked the higher court to overturn her illegal conviction, issue her state compensation, and hold responsible those who arrested, indicted, and sentenced her without any legal basis.

The appeals court accepted Ms. Wang’s case on January 7, 2026. Her family defender Jin (alias) submitted the paperwork to represent her. On January 21 and February 3, judge Kong Xianglai urged Jin to submit his defense statement as soon as possible. Jin said he needed more time as he hadn’t been allowed to review the case file yet. Kong replied that he’d allow Jin to review the file if he made sure not to photocopy, hand-copy, or photograph it. Kong repeated over ten times that Jin would not be allowed to make copies or take photos of the file. He also said that there was no room for “discussion” and “nothing can’t be fought for.”

When Jin came to the court to review the case file the next day, Kong reiterated that no form of duplication of the file would be allowed. When Jin demanded to know the reason, Kong was unable to provide any legal basis for it and left with the case file.

Jin submitted a request to the court president, Wang Zhiwen, to have Kong recused from the appeals case. Kong called on February 10, saying that he had denied the request. He added that Song Yongzheng was assigned to be the presiding judge in charge of the case, with himself and Gao Yanan being the assistant judges. He again demanded that Jin submit the defense statement.

On February 26, Jin called judge Song to inquire about the case, yet Song wasn’t aware that he had been assigned to work on it. Jin then requested to review the case file. Song didn’t allow him to make photocopies but said hand-copying certain paragraphs would be fine. However, before Jin went to the court to review the case file in the afternoon, he received a call from judge Kong’s clerk, ordering him to pick up the verdict.

When Jin arrived at the court in the afternoon, he called judge Song but no one answered the phone. Judge Kong’s clerk gave him a copy of the verdict, which was dated two weeks prior, on February 11.

Ms. Wang was transferred from the Shenyang City First Detention Center to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on April 15, 2026. Her family rushed to the prison that day. They were told that Ms. Wang was being held in the Second Division for the time being and would be assigned to a different division later on. They were not allowed to see her and were told to wait for further notification from the prison.

The Liaoning Province Women’s Prison is notorious for torturing Falun Gong practitioners. Many practitioners have died or became disabled as a result of torture and abuse in this prison.
