A 63-year-old woman in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, died in custody on June 11, 2026, less than 24 hours after she was arrested for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Hu Shangxiu, who worked at the Sandian Subdistrict Office in the Xinzhou District, was arrested at home around 2 p.m. on June 10, 2026, after officers from Zhucheng Police Station broke in and ransacked her place. No one in her family was home when she was arrested.

Instead of taking Ms. Hu to a police station or a detention center, the police took her to a secret location to interrogate her. During that time, she drank water twice and used the restroom twice. Around 4 a.m., she suddenly fell ill. The police didn’t try to resuscitate her or take her to a hospital. She died shortly after.

Ms. Hu had been very healthy with no pre-existing conditions before her arrest. Her family condemned the authorities for causing her death. Her body is being held in a funeral home as her family vows to seek justice for her.

The police claimed that they arrested six other practitioners for “promoting” Falun Gong at the Zhanglin Wet Market, and one of them allegedly “identified” Ms. Hu as the organizer. However, the police didn’t provide any details about the other practitioners, and Minghui.org has not confirmed their arrests. No law in China criminalizes Falun Gong, so even if Ms. Hu organized others to promote Falun Gong, she should not have been arrested.
