A man in Jingmen City, Hubei Province, passed away around the Chinese New Year in February 2024, while serving a four-year term for his faith in Falun Gong at the Fanjiatai Prison, Minghui.org recently learned.
Mr. Liu Deyu’s passing happened less than a year after his prison admission. He was 68.
Prior to his latest prison term, Mr. Liu also served a forced labor term and two prison terms for a total of 12 years. He lost his pension and his home. He was forced into displacement several times, sleeping in caves, by the roadside, or under a bridge.
Mr. Liu was last arrested on July 8, 2022, while talking to people about Falun Gong. The arrest came only seven months after he finished serving a previous five-year term. His rental place was raided and his Falun Gong books and other materials were confiscated.
While held at the Jingmen City Detention Center, Mr. Liu persisted in doing Falun Gong exercises and raising awareness about the persecution. He refused to watch propaganda programs defaming Falun Gong. The guards handcuffed and shackled him for days, during which time he needed help eating and using the restroom.
The police submitted Mr. Liu’s case to the Dongbao District Procuratorate. He was tried by the Dongbao District Court through a virtual hearing at the detention center on October 28, 2022. He acted as his own lawyer. The hearing ended in 30 minutes and he was sentenced to four years at an unknown time.
Mr. Liu was admitted to the Fanjiatai Prison on May 10, 2023, and died less than a year later. The prison quickly cremated his body and had his family pick up the ashes.
Shortly before Mr. Liu’s death, prison personnel went to his daughter’s home in a southern city, and ordered her to call her father and persuade him to renounce Falun Gong. Mr. Liu refused to comply and said in the video call that he looked forward to being reunited with his daughter and helping her take care of her children after he was released.
