(Minghui.org) A 79-year-old woman in Baoding City, Hebei Province, has been subjected to constant harassment by the authorities for the past 10 years, for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Bai Yushu is unable to live a normal life, and has also become alienated from many of her relatives, friends, and neighbors, who feared being implicated. A surveillance camera was recently installed on a utility pole outside her home, facing directly toward her front door.
Taking Up Falun Gong
Ms. Bai underwent a thoracotomy in 2008. After the surgery, lumps developed on both sides of the base of her tongue. She tried various treatments, but they didn't help much.
Recommended by a friend, she began practicing Falun Gong. Within a short period of time, she completely recovered, and has enjoyed good health ever since.
Non-Stop Harassment
Home Ransacked in 2016
Two officers led by Fan Zhenhua, head of the Fuping County Domestic Security Office, broke into Ms. Bai’s home on January 22, 2016. They confiscated four Falun Gong books, informational materials, and over 40 banners.
Ms. Bai was interrogated at the Domestic Security Office from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. After taking her back home, Fan raided her place again, confiscating nearly 1,000 copies of Falun Gong booklets and other informational materials. They also attempted to take more Falun Gong books and a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, but Ms. Bai stopped him. Before leaving, Fan said to her, “If you were younger, I would detain you for seven days.”
Another Home Raid in 2017
Ms. Bai was walking on the street on May 16, 2017, when six plainclothes officers approached her and snatched her purse. They pushed her to the ground, causing intense pain in her arms. Terrified, she had difficulty getting up. When Ms. Bai refused to go to the police station with them, the officers carried her away on a stretcher.
The police next went to Ms. Bai’s home and forced her son to open the door. They confiscated her Falun Gong books, media player, and informational materials. No officers produced their IDs or a search warrant during the raid.
Third Home Raid in 2019
Jia Xiaohui, head of the Domestic Security Office, instructor Guo Jinzhen, and three officers broke into Ms. Bai’s home on March 19, 2019. They searched around and took a large bag of Falun Gong materials and a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder.
Ms. Yang Zenghua, a local Falun Gong practitioner, came to visit Ms. Bai during the raid. The police searched her purse, and upon finding Falun Gong materials, they tied her up and took her to the police station for interrogation. She was released in the early evening.
Non-Stop Harassment During 2020-2025
From 2020 to 2025, Ms. Bai was harassed multiple times each year. The police also followed her when she visited other local practitioners or her relatives. They once told a practitioner, “We follow Bai Yushu when she distributes Falun Gong materials, and we take down all the posters or flyers she puts up.”
Ms. Bai also found her front door defaced with graffiti and a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder attached to it upside-down. Sometimes the lock was glued shut, forcing her to replace it. Her electric wheelchair battery was stolen multiple times.
Ms. Bai reported the incidents to the police, who promised an investigate, but she never received any update.
