(Minghui.org) I had a nickname in childhood that was linked to my physical appearance. I was delighted whenever I heard anyone call me this—“San Jun’er” (pretty, attractive, charming).
However, I wasn’t always attractive; my facial features underwent a complex process of change. I would like to share the story of my cultivation practice based on these changes, thereby validating the greatness of Master and the extraordinary nature of Falun Dafa (Falun Gong).
From Pretty to Unsightly
When I was little, whenever my mother and older sister carried me in public, people would often stroke my cheek and call out, “San Jun’er, San Jun’er.” I would respond with a thrilled giggle. In school, I was an excellent student; I served as class president and academic representative, and was deeply loved by my teachers and adored by my classmates.
One day, when I was nine years old, my living nightmare began. That afternoon after school, my friends and I were cutting grass in the field for our family’s cows when I suddenly noticed water rushing noisily through a newly dug irrigation ditch. I’m a timid person, and when I saw that my friends had already crossed to the other side of the ditch, I was shocked and felt as if something had taken possession of me. From that moment on, my life was never the same.
Early every second or third morning, while half asleep, I would feel something crawling up from my feet. Then I couldn’t tell whether it was strangling my throat or smothering my mouth, but would find myself unable to breathe and try to shout out for my mother.
No matter what she was doing, she would immediately rush over and press hard on the acupuncture point between my nose and lip, a rescue point. A frantic, chaotic struggle always ensued that lasted two to three minutes, leaving me utterly exhausted.
My parents took me to see doctors and seek treatments, burned incense, and kowtowed and prayed for divine help. I took countless medications, but nothing helped—and that cheerful, beautiful little girl slowly disappeared. Tormented by my illness, I often cried in secret, felt depressed and listless, and couldn’t even attend morning classes.
My face became covered with layer upon layer of pimples. Because they were itchy and painful, I kept squeezing them, often forcing out the little whiteheads. Before long, I noticed that the spots I’d squeezed had turned into tiny pits.
Apart from the areas around my upper and lower eyelids, I couldn’t find a single patch of smooth skin anywhere else. A close classmate’s father who hadn’t seen me for a while said, “What’s wrong with this pretty girl? How did she end up with a bumpy nose and puffy eyes?!”
It wasn’t until I started middle school that the condition finally went away, but by then my face looked utterly hideous. Hoping to smooth out my skin, I’d been scrubbing it vigorously and scraping the pits with my fingernails, trying to level them out. I’d slather on a thick layer of face cream to try and cover up the pockmarks. But nothing worked—I had truly changed from being one of the prettiest girls to the ugliest.
During my first year at work, a young, outspoken colleague joked, “Your face looks like it’s been pecked by a little bird.” I was so embarrassed—I really wanted the ground to swallow me up right then. I resented him for a while because he hadn’t spared my feelings.
Health Worsened by Emotional Trauma
After I got married, not only did my complexion fail to improve, but my internal organs also began to deteriorate and I developed digestive issues. I was unfamiliar with my in-laws’ temperaments and didn’t know how to navigate a different family’s dynamics, while my mother-in-law treated me harshly. Beyond saddling us with significant debt, my in-laws went to great lengths to badmouth me—both within the family and to the outside world.
As I am naturally quiet, I wouldn’t argue with them—fearing embarrassment—so I just bottled up my frustration and anger. Eventually, my stomach condition worsened and became painful, so the doctor prescribed medication to ease the problem. After years of not needing any, I found myself buying bottle after bottle of pills again.
Because I was suppressing my frustration, soon I also developed headaches and insomnia, keeping me awake night after night and leaving me drowsy at work during the day. So, again following my doctor’s advice, I started taking medication for insomnia as well.
I was constantly stressed and frustrated, which ruined my health. I also had a gynecological infection and ended up with piles of medications—for external use and oral drugs.
One winter night, my mother-in-law was hospitalized after a traffic accident. On the way to the hospital, I caught a cold from the freezing air, which developed into chronic rhinitis so severe that I could only breathe through my mouth when lying down.
To make matters worse, the doctor suspected I had chronic kidney inflammation (pyelonephritis). Life was truly miserable. Despite having only just turned 30, I felt like I couldn’t go on—I honestly didn't want to live any longer.
Cultivation Transformed Me
A precious book completely changed my destiny. Around late March or early April of 1999, it was finally my turn to read the sacred book Zhuan Falun. When I got home from work, I eagerly opened the book; the moment I laid eyes on Master’s portrait, a warm current surged through my heart. “Ah,” I thought, “isn’t this someone who was once my family?” I was overcome with an emotion too profound for words.
I started reading and fell asleep before I knew it, with the book beside my pillow. From that moment on, my insomnia disappeared. As my heart started to open, I began to hold myself to the standards of Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance, and I learned to understand my in-laws from their perspective. I stopped bottling up my anger, and my other ailments faded away as well.
Most amazingly, after an intense bout of itching, my face never broke out again, and the pitted scars on my face gradually smoothed out.
Once, I ran into a classmate from high school who was working out of town. When he returned home, he told his wife (also my former classmate) that my skin had improved and I looked even prettier than I used to in my early school days.
When I went to a local festival at a relative’s house, I overheard some older neighbors whispering that I’d become pretty again. Younger colleagues gossiped behind my back, saying I was incredibly attractive, and some beauty-conscious youngsters asked me, “How come everything you wear looks good on you?”
Now, people often say that I wear nice, designer clothes. The truth is, I don’t go out of my way to dress up, nor do I think I’m particularly attractive. All I know is that as a young girl, I became embarrassingly ugly; yet now, approaching 50, I regularly receive compliments. I really am more attractive than I used to be, but it is actually the inner beauty that practicing Falun Gong has revealed!
Through the profound Fa teachings, Master not only improved my appearance but also purified my body on numerous occasions. In the years since 1999, the rheumatoid arthritis in my finger joints and knees went away, and a tumor in my nasal cavity disappeared as well.
These are the physical changes I am aware of. In reality, Master has bestowed far more upon his disciples. I am deeply grateful for Master's compassionate salvation!
