(Minghui.org) After I married into my husband’s family, I always felt oppressed. My father-in-law was often away from home, and my mother-in-law was very domineering. Everything had to be done according to her wishes. If something displeased her, she lost her temper and threw things—she even hit my husband. I had to pay attention to her mood and act accordingly.
My mother-in-law set the rules. For example, my husband gave his salary to her, while my salary was used to cover our household expenses. After we had children, she took care of them because she didn’t work. However, I had to pay her the same amount I would have paid someone else. I went along with it, thinking: it’s fine as long as she’s happy.
I began feeling that my mother-in-law did these things to bully me. She liked to play mahjong and cards and brought her card-playing friends home. I always happily served and entertained them. They all said, “Your daughter-in-law is wonderful!” But she replied right in front of me, “How dare she not be good?” I felt upset and didn’t understand why she said such things, but I said nothing and simply walked away.
During the Chinese New Year holidays, my mother-in-law did not allow us to prepare more dishes than usual. On New Year’s Eve, she did not let us watch television. She would say, “Stay in your room.” She even said that seeing me made her annoyed. At that time, the stove and the only television in the house were in her room. During traditional holidays, my mother-in-law did not let us prepare anything. She waited until I went to my parents’ home, then she invited her two married daughters and their families over to celebrate the holiday. My brothers-in-law later told me about this.
My mother-in-law also repeatedly accused me of stealing her things. When I washed her clothes, she claimed I took money from her pocket and told my husband to demand that I return it. If I said anything she did not like, she would throw away all the food we prepared and wouldn’t let us cook anything else. She even said, “If I can’t have a good life, no one else should expect to have one either!”
One incident in particular stands out. A colleague came to my home to see me. At the time, my mother-in-law was watching television in our room. When my husband saw that someone had come, he said, “Mom, can you watch TV in the other room?”Without saying a word, my mother-in-law turned off the circuit breaker. Just then, my husband’s older sister arrived. She asked, “Why is your electricity off?” My mother-in-law replied, “It isn’t off. I turned off the circuit breaker.” When my sister-in-law saw that my colleague was visiting, she felt this was completely inappropriate and said to my mother-in-law, “How could you do something like this? This is too much!” After my sister-in-law persuaded her, my mother-in-law turned the power back on.
My resentment for my mother-in-law grew. I was jealous of how well she treated her daughters. Regardless of how well we treated her, she never appreciated it and instead became even more unreasonable.
I felt depressed every day, and when I thought about all these things, I became extremely angry. As a result, I developed new health problems on top of the ones I already had. I suffered from insomnia and I had no appetite. After I went to the hospital for an examination, the doctor said I had a nervous breakdown and heart disease. The only options were taking medication and managing my condition myself. I was extremely thin and weak. I decided that I no longer wanted to live with my mother-in-law. After discussing it with my husband, we moved into a rental apartment provided by our workplace, and we cut off all contact with her.
After I began to practice I realized that Falun Dafa is a profound cultivation practice that teaches people to cultivate virtue and become kind. Practitioners are required to live according to Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance—to be good people, be even better people, and be people who consider others in everything they do. The principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance opened my heart. Master’s teachings dissolved the resentment I accumulated toward my mother-in-law over many years. I visited her and made peace with her, and she was very happy.
From then on, no matter what my mother-in-law did, I tried to understand her and not get angry. Occasionally, I was unable to maintain my xinxing, but I was ultimately able to remember the Fa and correct myself, identify my attachments, and eliminate them. My illnesses disappeared and I felt light and healthy. My husband happily said, “Just practice well. This Dafa is truly wonderful!”
When my father-in-law became ill and was hospitalized, I feared that my mother-in-law would become exhausted, so I quit my job and went to the hospital to care for him. This made both my mother-in-law and father-in-law very happy. After he was discharged from the hospital, I brought him to our home and continued to take care of him. In addition to taking care of his daily needs, I also gave him Dafa books to read, or I read them to him.
When I changed, so did my mother-in-law. When I read the Fa to my father-in-law, she listened. The more she listened, the more she enjoyed it. Later, my mother-in-law also began to practice Dafa. She persists in doing the exercises and studying the Fa every day, and she has copied Zhuan Falun twice by hand. She is now in her 90s, yet she is healthy and still lives independently without needing anyone to care for her. She even prepares food for her grandchildren. I suggested that my husband live with her to keep her company, but she refused. She said, “If I need you, I’ll call you.”
After seeing the miraculous and extraordinary changes in my mother-in-law, my husband’s second sister read Zhuan Falun and learned the five Dafa exercises. I know all these wonderful things came from Master’s grace. I’m truly grateful to Master and Dafa!
As a practitioner during the Fa-rectification period, I continue doing the three things. It is only by studying the Fa more in the future and truly coming to understand the Fa can I improve myself. Only by eliminating more of my human attachments can I better clarify the truth and help Master save more sentient beings. I want to follow Master’s teachings and genuinely cultivate.
I hope that sentient beings will learn the truth as soon as possible, believe that “Falun Dafa is good; Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good,” and choose a beautiful future for themselves.
I am grateful to Master for never giving up on me, and I’m grateful for Master’s protection and compassionate salvation throughout my cultivation journey.
