(Minghui.org) A 54-year-old man in Lechang City, Guangdong Province, was sentenced to three years because he practices Falun Gong, Minghui.org learned recently.

Mr. Liang Jianjun, a vocational school teacher, was arrested with his wife, Ms. Cao Liping, 50, who also practices Falun Gong, in mid-July 2025. It is unclear when Mr. Liang was tried and sentenced. He is still held at the Lechang City Detention Center at the time of this report.

Ms. Cao stood trial on December 16, 2025, and her case status remains unknown. She is currently held at the Shaoguan City Detention Center. Shaoguan oversees Lechang.

Past Persecution

This is not the first time the couple have been targeted for their faith. Mr. Liang was previously arrested on May 25, 2017, and sentenced to five years in prison on November 7, 2018. Ms. Cao was arrested on April 13, 2018, and taken to a brainwashing center when she sought to get her husband released. Their then 11-year-old daughter was taken to her hometown in Yizhang County, Hunan Province.

Located in the Sanshui District of Foshan City in Guangdong Province, the brainwashing center where Ms. Cao was held was also known as the “Guangdong Province Legal Education Center.” A previous report detailed the persecution of Ms. Cao and other Falun Gong practitioners who were held there. This article provides some additional details.

Ms. Cao was monitored around the clock, even when she used the restroom. A female officer named Zhang Meilian complained that Ms. Cao’s cell had a strange odor and said that the odor would disappear if she agreed to renounce her faith.

Ms. Cao held firm to her faith and was threatened with a prison sentence and violence. The guards at the brainwashing center pushed her around, causing Ms. Cao severe stress. They then claimed that she had a mental illness. Guard Yan (badge number 4470031) verbally abused her and also slandered Falun Gong and her defense lawyer.

The guards laced Ms. Cao’s food with unknown drugs. She suffered memory loss and became dazed. After Ms. Cao was released (date unknown), it took her a very long time to recall what happened to her at the brainwashing center.

As Ms. Cao remained firm in her faith, the guards threatened to “cause trouble” for her daughter and brother. Worried about her loved ones, against her will, she wrote statements to renounce her faith.

On May 24, 2018, doctor Yang at the brainwashing center ordered Ms. Cao to submit to some blood work. When she refused, Yang said her eyes and face showed signs of kidney failure. When she again refused, an inmate grabbed her hand for Yang to draw blood. Yang then sent the blood sample to Guangzhou (capital city of Guangdong Province) for testing. Half a month later Yang told Ms. Cao that the test results were good and promised that she could have a copy when she was released. Yang never gave her the test results.

Another doctor, surnamed Huang, also often urged Ms. Cao to undergo physical exams. She refused and a guard surnamed Ke (badge number 4470023) said she had to have a checkup. She had one on July 4, 2018, and Huang told her later that she had a benign ovarian tumor.

Huang told Ms. Cao’s family that she developed an ovarian tumor because she practiced Falun Gong and that it developed into cancer. Her sister and mother were worried but her mother-in-law did not believe Huang’s claim, as she knew that Ms. Cao recovered from kidney failure through practicing Falun Gong years ago.

It was unclear when Ms. Cao was released from the brainwashing center. She was arrested another time, on April 25, 2021, and held at the Shaoguan City Lockup until June 10 of that year.
