(Minghui.org) I began practicing Falun Dafa in 1997, and soon experienced extraordinary health benefits. Even though I lack an advanced degree, and consider my writing skills rather poor, I was encouraged by fellow practitioners to share my story.

Before learning Falun Dafa, my health was in a very poor state—I had suffered from severe arthritis in my right leg since 1958, enduring decades of crippling pain. I also developed an abnormal spinal growth in my neck in the 1980s, and experienced frozen shoulders. Each day was filled with pain, but the worst was yet to come.

One afternoon in December 1991, as I was lifting a heavy box, I injured my back. My condition steadily deteriorated, and I reached the point where I had to take sick leave. A family member arranged for a doctor to visit me at home, but after being treated my condition worsened, and I immediately lost all feeling in my waist and right leg. Several hours later, my left leg lost mobility, and I was unable to walk.

I was rushed to the local hospital the next day. After several tests, the doctor diagnosed me with arthritis, and recommended Chinese herbs to relax my muscles and tendons, and promote blood circulation to alleviate the numbness. A week passed with no improvement. When my work supervisors visited me and saw my poor condition, they requested that the hospital director transfer me to a provincial hospital for further examination.

The following day I was transferred to the provincial hospital, which had the only MRI in the province—and a large number of people waiting. Not wanting to wait three days, I offered money to the doctor who operated the machine, and received an immediate scan. The result revealed a lumbar disc herniation, and surgery was recommended.

I was then transferred to a military hospital for surgery. During the surgery, the chief physician was shocked at what he saw. “What kind of disc herniation is this? The disc is shattered! I’ve never seen anything like this. Even with surgery, the patient won’t be much better off.” The surgery procedure took seven hours. A month later, with no improvement in my condition, I returned home.

A few months later, I returned to the local hospital hoping for the possibility of other treatments. After a CT scan, the doctor said that my fifth lumbar vertebra needed surgery. He invited a doctor from the provincial hospital, who was also a professor, to examine me. After a thorough examination, the professor said, “Your condition is very serious. I am afraid I can’t operate on you.” When I asked for an explanation, he explained that as a result of my previous surgery, none of the nerves were where they were supposed to be. “There is nothing I can do for you,” he said before leaving.

The next morning I spoke with a head doctor and pleaded for any possibility of surgery, but he turned me down. Disheartened, I asked my son to take me home. As soon as I arrived home, I called the military hospital and inquired about surgery. To my surprise, they agreed to operate.

I underwent the second surgery in August 1992, but it didn’t help, and my waist and legs remained numb. Devastated and desperate, I bought all kinds of physical therapy devices and applied different ointments to my waist. Yet, nothing worked.

By this point I had been on sick leave for nearly six years. While my coworkers’ salaries went up, I received only 60 percent of my old salary, which was 190 yuan (US$28) per month. My misery deeply affected my wife, and led to her suffering several heart episodes. It felt as if our lives were falling apart.

Convinced that my life was over, I lost all will to go on. In May 1997, I prepared a syringe and a razor blade, planning to kill myself when no one was home. Yet, each time I tried to follow through with it, I kept thinking, “What if I am better tomorrow?”

A coworker visited me one day and asked if I wanted to learn Falun Gong. He said, “The practice has a miraculous healing power.” I told him that my condition made it impossible to do the exercises, and he suggested that I read the book first. I agreed to give it a try.

The next day, the practitioner brought me a copy of Zhuan Falun. After I began reading, I couldn’t put it down, thinking that everything in the book resonated so well with me. By the time I was half way through, the alcohol I drank and cigarettes I smoked every day no longer appealed to me, and I naturally gave them up. I later realized that Master was helping me, and I made up my mind to become a diligent practitioner.

Knowing I was unable to join them outside, the practitioners put up a poster with illustrations of the exercise movements on my wall. It took me two days to learn the movements. At first I could only manage to stand for five minutes before I had to sit down to rest, but the time I was able to stand increased day by day. In less than two weeks I could exercise outside like everyone else, and all my illnesses had vanished! My family was overjoyed.

I had been bed-ridden for nearly six years, and no treatments, surgery, or medication was able to help me—that is, until I came across Falun Gong. To thank Master and Dafa, I made a beautiful flag and displayed it at the exercise site.

Many of my coworkers suffered from chronic or serious illnesses that couldn’t be cured by modern medicine. Witnessing my remarkable recovery—and in a very short time—the number of practitioners at work soared from seven to over 300, and included the supervisors. To promote the practice outside of work, I went to remote villages to tell others about my experience, and the healing power of Falun Gong.

It has now been almost 30 years since I became a practitioner in June 1997. Reading Master’s teachings and practicing the exercises every day has kept my health in an optimal state. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Master and Dafa.
