(Minghui.org) When Ms. Rong Tiewen was released from the Jilin Province Women’s Prison in June 2025, she discovered that her pension had been suspended.
The Jilin City, Jilin Province, woman asked that her pension be reinstated, but the Jilin City Social Security Center demanded that she first return the 80,000 yuan issued to her during her imprisonment. They said that they’d re-evaluate her pension amount after she paid back the “debt.”
Ms. Rong, 79, was jailed and persecuted financially because she held firm to her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Her prison sentence stemmed from her initial arrest on October 6, 2017. She was released on bail on November 14 that year. When she went to the Fengman District Court on April 20, 2018, to have her bail renewed, she was arrested and shoved into a cage after refusing to renounce Falun Gong. The Jilin City Detention Center declined to admit her, and she was released that day.
Ms. Rong, the former principal of a driving school, was informed in July 2018 that the court had scheduled a hearing of her case. To avoid further persecution, she lived away from home and remained displaced for three years. She was arrested again in July 2021, shortly after she returned home. See the related reports for details of her 2017 arrest and subsequent persecution.
The Fengman District Court sentenced Ms. Rong to four and a half years, and she was admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison in September 2021. She was released ahead of time in June 2025, only to have to fight for her pension reinstatement.
