Tribulations Are Stepping Stones in Our Cultivation

Sept. 1, 2026 |   By a Falun Dafa practitioner in Hebei Province, China

(Minghui.org) While I was clarifying the facts about Dafa to people, I met an elderly practitioner who told me about the difficulties she was experiencing with her husband. She said that he interfered with her cultivation, including snatching the book from her hands while she studied the Fa, or he grabbed her MP3 player while she did the exercises. Her left eye was injured during one of these scuffles when he grabbed her copy of Zhuan Falun. He threatened to report her to the local police station to have her imprisoned for a few years, and then he would divorce her. She looked depressed as she spoke. I experienced similar family tribulations. I said, “You must keep your mind steady. Don’t harbor resentment or a sense of unfairness—instead eliminate your attachments to your family.”

I told her about my experience: “When I was going through my family tribulation, I struggled greatly because I held onto so many human attachments. Later, through studying the Fa, reading fellow practitioners’ articles on the Minghui website, discussing the issues with other practitioners, and constantly looking inward, I gradually changed my mindset. I realized that my husband’s behavior stemmed from my human attachments. He was essentially ‘acting out a role’ to provide a stepping stone for my cultivation. He was actually helping me, and I really needed to thank him. Once I let go of my resentment toward him, the look in his eyes changed, and his attitude improved. I would cook meals that suited his taste, and he would insist that I eat them too, which had never happened before. When you truly remove the attachment to life and death and remain steadfast in the Fa, your husband will no longer threaten to report you. When he causes trouble, send righteous thoughts instead of arguing with him.”

She and I were not very close, but she shared her tribulation with me, so I felt that it was arranged by Master to give me the opportunity to share my experiences and help her overcome the hurdle. Cultivation is truly about looking inward and cultivating oneself.

Let me share another story about interacting with a veteran practitioner. I knew an old practitioner in our Fa-study group who was very capable, well-spoken, and strong-willed. She handled her family’s business in the past. At that time, I had just returned to cultivation, and we were printing copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party and creating truth-clarification DVDs. I was truly impressed by her words and actions, and over the years, I developed an attachment to her—I began to admire and rely on her. During the COVID pandemic, I could not go to her home for the Fa study because her family members, who were non-practitioners, did not want outsiders visiting. It was then that I realized I depended on her. I felt distressed at the thought of not going to her home to study the Fa.

I told myself, “I can study the Fa just as well at home. It is not my true self that is distressed.” Eventually, I stopped feeling distressed about studying at home. After the pandemic subsided, she invited fellow practitioners back to her home for Fa study.

Later, I felt that she tended to talk incessantly and dominate the conversation, and some of her remarks were not aligned with the Fa. She had not gone out to clarify the facts about Dafa to people for a long time, and she would not listen when I tried to communicate with her. When I was at her home, I felt an invisible force suppressing me, so I was unable to recall the Fa or respond properly.

I looked inward to find the cause and realized that it was my attachment of admiration for her because I thought she was highly capable. I needed to remove this attachment. I told her that I would be leaving the group for a while to adjust myself, look inward, and get rid of my human attachments.

After a few months, I thought that living in the same residential complex with her was a predestined relationship, and since she previously helped me overcome a family tribulation, I should return to her home for the Fa study. When I went back, the previous sense of suppression was gone. We engaged in very little conversation but focused on studying the Fa. I knew I had let go of my attachment.

I realized that nothing I see or encounter happens by chance. Everything is arranged by Master to help me improve. When I truly look inward, I will discover things I need to cultivate and human attachments I need to remove. I must change my mindset and regard everything as a stepping stone in my cultivation.

These are some of my personal cultivation insights. If anything is not in accordance with the Fa, please kindly point it out.
