Mr. Niu Beiyan, a Beijing resident, passed away on October 19, 2024, four months after he completed a three-year term for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. He was 55.

Mr. Niu, a trader at the Yuekai Securities in Beijing, was arrested at work at around 10 a.m. on June 21, 2021. More than ten officers searched his office and confiscated some of his personal items, including a printer. Around 11 a.m., they raided his home, taking away several Falun Gong books and a portrait of the founder of Falun Gong. His private car was also searched.

Mr. Niu later learned that the police arrested him after spotting him distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. They followed him to his workplace and later arrested him.

The police held Mr. Niu at the Fangshan District Second Detention Center, without issuing a detention notice to his family. When his family found out about his arrest and detention, they went to the Fangshan District Police Department to seek his release, but to no avail.

Mr. Niu was tried by the Fangshan District Court on September 28, 2022. His mother, Ms. Ma Fengxian, and his daughter went to attend his hearing, but were blocked outside. While waiting outside of the court, Ms. Ma, in her 80s, was arrested herself and taken to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison in the capital city of Harbin, to serve a four-year term handed down in 2021 for distributing Falun Gong materials. While she was allowed to serve time at home back then, the authorities took her back into custody to prevent her from seeking justice for her son.

Mr. Niu was later sentenced to three years and also ordered to serve time in the family’s home province of Heilongjiang like his mother. By the time he was released from the Hulan Prison on June 20, 2024, the once healthy man had become was very weak and had difficulty climbing stairs. He had a stroke on October 5 and died 14 days later on October 19.
