(Minghui.org) A 58-year-old Shulan City, Jilin Province resident was sentenced to one and a half years in prison with two years of probation in December 2024, for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhang Jinhua, a retired auditor, was arrested on June 2, 2024, along with her 83-year-old mother-in-law, after they were reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. Officers from the Jishu Police Station soon arrived to arrest them, and later raided their shared residence.
While Ms. Zhang’s mother-in-law was released that evening, Ms. Zhang was taken to the Jilin City Detention Center the next afternoon. She stood trial at the Shulan City Court on November 19 and was convicted weeks later. She was released on December 10 to serve her two-year probation. The authorities warned her that she still faces the 1.5-year jail term if she ever “violates” probation [for wrongly convicted Falun Gong practitioners, that often means they did something to raise awareness of the persecution].
Ms. Zhang had only began practicing Falun Gong in 2023, after years of medical treatments failed to cure her numerous illnesses. She gradually recovered and was no longer severely underweight. She became energetic and walked briskly. She also had a rosy complexion. More than once her acquaintances marveled at her transformation after running into her on the street. She always told them that her secret was practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang was also better able to cope with the death of her husband, as Falun Gong enabled her to understand that there is a reason behind everything. She also became more considerate by following the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Even though her husband passed away, she still took meticulous care of his mother, who also practices Falun Gong. The two women however were targeted for simply telling others that Falun Gong is good, and the persecution is illegal.
